Travel across Madhya Pradesh and you pass through more than two thousand years of building history: prehistoric painted shelters, early Buddhist stupas, Gupta cave temples, the soaring towers of Khajuraho, Afghan mosques on a plateau, Bundela palaces on a river island, Mughal waterworks, Maratha chhatris and modern temple corridors. MP has three UNESCO World Heritage Sites and several more on UNESCO's tentative list. For MPPSC, architecture is a rich source of both factual and analytical questions.

Water heritage

The Kundi Bhandara at Burhanpur — an underground water-supply system built in the Mughal period (early seventeenth century) — carries groundwater through tunnels and wells to the city. It is one of the few such historic systems still functioning in India.

Modern religious corridors

  • Mahakal Lok at Ujjain — a corridor around the Mahakaleshwar temple, inaugurated in 2022, designed to improve facilities for pilgrims and showcase stories of Shiva through sculpture.
  • Ekatmata Dham at Omkareshwar, with a large statue of Adi Shankaracharya (the "Statue of Oneness", unveiled in 2023).

Why architecture matters for MPPSC

  1. Prelims — dates, builders, locations and styles.
  2. Mains GS I — questions on temple styles, heritage conservation, cultural continuity.
  3. Essay and interview — heritage and tourism as themes.
