About the BPSC exam

The Bihar Public Service Commission's Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) fills state posts such as Senior Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Revenue Officer and Block Development Officer. It is open to graduates, and Bihar runs through every paper: its history from Magadha to the JP movement, its rivers and floods, and its economy and schemes. If your notes or advice are a few years old, check them against the current pattern first, because it has changed.

Selection has three stages. Prelims is a single General Studies paper of 150 questions that only screens; there is no separate CSAT. Negative marking applies, and the notification gives the fraction. In Mains, General Hindi (30 per cent to pass) and an objective Optional are qualifying, and your written merit comes from GS I, GS II and the Essay, 300 marks each. Add the 120-mark interview and the final list is drawn up on 1,020 marks.

Read the “Start here” guides first: the pattern, the syllabus with its Bihar focus, the Prelims and Mains strategies, the two qualifying papers and a 12-month plan. Then go subject by subject, from Bihar History and Geography to Polity, Economy, Science and Current Affairs. Practise the Essay early, since it carries as much weight as a GS paper.

  1. 1The BPSC CCE, stage by stageThe Bihar Public Service Commission's Combined Competitive Examination recruits SDMs, DSPs and dozens of other officers every year. Its Mains changed significantly in recent cycles — a 300-mark Essay, a qualifying objective Optional and a qualifying Hindi paper. What each stage involves and how merit is calculated.
  2. 2Reading the BPSC syllabus: where Bihar comes inThe BPSC syllabus looks like a shorter version of UPSC's — until you notice how often Bihar appears in it. History, geography, economy, polity, the national movement: each has a Bihar layer that decides many marks. A line-by-line way to map the syllabus and build a Bihar micro-syllabus.
  3. 3BPSC Prelims: a strategy for 150 questionsBPSC Prelims is a single paper of 150 questions in two hours — with no separate CSAT, but with negative marking and a heavy dose of Bihar. How to divide your preparation, which sources to trust, and how to attempt the paper so that you clear the cut-off with room to spare.
  4. 4BPSC Mains: a strategy for GS I and GS IIWith the Optional now qualifying, the two General Studies papers carry 600 of the 900 written merit marks in BPSC Mains. What each paper covers, how questions are framed, where Bihar comes in, how to budget three hours, and a practical routine to write faster, better-structured answers.
  5. 5The General Hindi paper: clearing the 30 per cent markGeneral Hindi is qualifying — you need 30 per cent — and it is set at roughly the secondary school level. That makes it easy to underestimate. Candidates who have written mostly in English for years, and those careless with grammar and spelling, still fail it. What it tests, worked examples for each section, and how to clear it safely.
  6. 6The qualifying Optional: choosing and clearing itIn the current BPSC pattern, the Optional is a 100-mark objective paper that you only need to qualify. That changes how you should choose it and how much time you should give it. A practical guide to picking a subject, preparing efficiently and avoiding a costly surprise.
  7. 7A 12-month plan for BPSCTwelve months is enough to prepare seriously for BPSC — if you build the national and Bihar foundations together, start writing early, and leave room for revision. A phase-by-phase plan with a weekly hour budget, templates for full-time and working aspirants, and checkpoints.
  8. 8NCERT and Bihar textbooks: the foundationFor the all-India base, NCERT. For Bihar's own history, geography and society, the state's textbooks and a few carefully chosen references. Which books to read, in what order, and how to turn them into notes and answers that serve both Prelims and Mains.

BPSC guides in Hindi — the same content as the English guides, for Hindi-medium aspirants.
