The BPSC syllabus is short — a page or two for each paper. That brevity misleads. Candidates read it once, assume it is "UPSC-lite", and prepare from national sources. Then the paper asks about the Vajji confederacy, the Kosi's shifting course, the Bihar caste survey or Bihar's contribution to the 1857 revolt, and they realise the Commission meant every word.
Start with the official document
Download the current syllabus from bpsc.bihar.gov.in. Keep a printed copy. The pattern has changed in recent cycles, so make sure your document matches your examination year.

A method for mapping the syllabus
1. Break each line into keywords
Take a line such as "Indian economy and geography of India" and ask what the Bihar dimension is:
- economy: Bihar's growth, sectors, per capita income, migration, state finances, agriculture road maps, industrial policy;
- geography: physiography, the Ganga and its tributaries, floods, soils, crops, forests, minerals after 2000.
2. Tag static and dynamic

3. Map previous-year questions
Classify every question from the last five or six BPSC papers by syllabus line. You will see which Bihar topics recur — for example, the ancient universities, Buddhist and Jain sites, rivers, freedom fighters, and state schemes.

Statistics, graphs and diagrams
GS I includes statistical analysis, graphs and diagrams — a section that many humanities candidates fear. It usually involves reading data, calculating averages, percentages and ratios, and drawing or interpreting simple charts. It is very scorable with practice. Bihar sources worth knowing
- Bihar Economic Survey — prepared by the state Finance Department every year before the budget.
- Bihar budget documents.
- Bihar state textbooks and NCERTs for the foundation.
- A standard Bihar general knowledge book for history, geography and culture — verified against better sources where doubtful.
- State government websites — for schemes such as Saat Nischay and JEEViKA.
- A reputable Hindi newspaper with Bihar editions, plus a national English newspaper.
Revisit the syllabus regularly
- Before starting a topic, find its syllabus line.
- While reading the newspaper, tag Bihar items to lines.
- Before a test, re-read the relevant lines.
- In revision, ask for each line: can I write 150 words on it with at least one Bihar example?
A one-hour exercise
Pick three syllabus lines. For each:
- Break it into all-India and Bihar keywords.
- Find one national and one Bihar source.
- Write two possible Mains questions.
That hour will give you a clearer map of BPSC than weeks of unplanned reading.
