If you are a woman graduate looking at CDS, start with one question: which academy is actually open to you? In recent notifications the answer has been one. Women apply through CDS for the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, on the Short Service Commission (Women) non-technical course. IMA, INA and AFA have been open only to men through this exam, and that exclusion has been challenged in the Delhi High Court.

That single fact shapes your whole preparation. You sit two papers, not three. Your written score is out of 200, your final merit out of 400, and you compete for a separate, small set of vacancies. This guide works through each of those points and ends with a plan you can start this week.

Which doors are open

AcademyOpen to women through CDS (recent notifications)What it means for you
IMA, DehradunNoUnder challenge in court; check each cycle
INA, EzhimalaNoCheck each cycle
AFA, DundigalNoCheck each cycle
OTA, ChennaiYes, SSC (Women) non-technical courseEnglish and GK papers only

CDS is not the only route. Outside this exam, women can enter the services through the NDA (after Class 12), AFCAT for the Air Force, and the services' own direct-entry schemes, such as NCC special entry and some Navy entries. Each has its own notification and rules. If flying or the Navy is your real goal, look at those routes alongside CDS rather than waiting for this one to change.

Eligibility in detail

  • Age: the same window as the OTA course for men, roughly 19 to 25 in recent cycles. The notification prints it as two birth dates, so check your date of birth against them, not against "19 to 25".
  • Education: a degree from a recognised university in any subject. Final-year students can usually apply if they can show proof of passing by the date the notification fixes.
  • Marital status: recent notifications have allowed unmarried women, and issueless widows and issueless divorcees who have not remarried (divorcees must hold the divorce documents). Marriage is not permitted during training.
  • Nationality: as for all CDS candidates.

The full academy-by-academy rules are in the CDS eligibility guide. Read the marital-status clause in the notification word by word. It is short, and it is the clause candidates most often misread.

The written exam: two papers, 200 marks

Because OTA is the only academy open to you, you do not take the Elementary Mathematics paper.

PaperQuestionsMarksTimePenalty per wrong answer
English1201002 hoursone-third of the question's marks
General Knowledge1201002 hoursone-third of the question's marks

Two things follow from this.

Every mark is concentrated in two papers. A 10-mark gain in GK is 5 per cent of your written total. For an IMA candidate, the same gain is about 3.3 per cent of 300. Small, steady improvements in accuracy matter more for you than for almost anyone else in the exam hall.

You compete on a separate list. UPSC fixes vacancies for the women's OTA course separately, and results have treated it as its own list with its own cut-off. The number of seats is small compared with the men's OTA course, so do not assume the bar is low. Look up the marks notices of the last few cycles on the UPSC website to see where recent cut-offs have fallen.

A quick way to think about targets: a hypothetical candidate who scores 62 in English and 48 in GK has 110 of 200, which is 55 per cent. If recent cut-offs for your list sit near that level, 55 per cent is a floor, not a goal. Aim for a margin, because the written score also carries into the final merit.

The SSB and the medical

The SSB is the same five-day procedure for every candidate: screening on day one, then psychological tests, group tasks with the GTO, a personal interview, and a conference on the last day. The same officer-like qualities are assessed, and the SSB carries 200 marks for OTA, equal to the written exam. Your final merit is out of 400.

Recommended candidates then take a detailed medical examination at a military hospital. The standards for height, weight in proportion to height, eyesight, hearing, dental health and general fitness are in the notification's appendix. Many rejections are for correctable reasons, such as excess weight, ear wax or untreated dental problems. Fix these months before the SSB, not after a temporary rejection.

Training at OTA and the career after it

Training at OTA lasts about 49 weeks. Women trainees are called Lady Cadets and train alongside Gentleman Cadets: physical training, drill, weapons, tactics, map reading, leadership appointments and a strict honour code. The pace in the first weeks is hard for everyone. Arriving fit makes the difference between adapting and struggling.

On passing out you are commissioned as a Lieutenant on a short service commission. Under the rules of recent years, that is ten years, extendable by up to four more. In 2020 the Supreme Court held that women short service officers in the Army must be considered for permanent commission on the same terms as men, so the fixed term is no longer a hard ceiling for eligible officers. The arms and services that take women officers have also widened over the years, including the Regiment of Artillery more recently. Check the current terms in the notification, because they can change.

A preparation plan built for two papers

This plan assumes about three hours a day on weekdays and more at weekends.

DayEnglish (60–75 min)GK (75–90 min)Fitness (40 min)
MondayError spotting and sentence improvementHistoryRun
TuesdayVocabulary: synonyms, antonyms, idiomsGeographyStrength
WednesdayReading comprehension, timedPolity and economyRun
ThursdayOrdering and fill in the blanksGeneral scienceStrength
FridayCloze test and review of the week's errorsCurrent affairs and defenceRest or yoga
SaturdayFull English paper, timedFull GK paper, timedLong run
SundayAnalyse both papers; update error notebookWeekly current-affairs revisionRest

A few notes on the plan:

  • Newspaper every day, about 30 minutes. It feeds English reading speed, GK and the SSB interview at once.
  • Previous-year papers first. UPSC's own papers show you the level and style better than any mock series.
  • Fitness is not optional. Build to running 5 km comfortably, with push-ups, sit-ups and some rope or bar work. GTO tasks and the first weeks at OTA both reward it.
  • Start SSB work early. Read about the Army, speak about current issues in English with a friend, and write down your reasons for choosing the forces. The OTA strategy guide goes deeper into the two-paper approach.

Common mistakes

  • Preparing maths "just in case". If the notification for your cycle opens only OTA to women, those hours belong to English and GK. Re-check every cycle, and adjust only if the rules change.
  • Treating GK as a memory list. GK questions often test understanding: why a river floods, what a constitutional amendment changed. Read for reasons, then revise the facts.
  • Ignoring the vacancy count. Few seats mean a competitive list. Read the notification's vacancy table so your target is realistic.
  • Leaving fitness and medicals to the end. Weight, eyesight checks and dental work take months to sort out.
  • Misreading the marital clause. Candidates occasionally lose a place over it after clearing everything else.

Your checklist

  • I have confirmed in the current notification which academies are open to women
  • My date of birth falls within the notified OTA window
  • I meet the marital-status condition and know it applies through training
  • I have solved at least one full previous-year English and GK paper under time
  • I have looked up the recent cut-offs and vacancies for the women's OTA list
  • I have started a fitness routine and checked my height, weight and eyesight against the appendix
  • I can say in three sentences why I want to serve as an Army officer

Once the checklist is done, build your fitness base with the physical fitness guide for CDS, and keep English and GK as the daily core. Two papers, done well, are the whole written exam for you.

A note on dates and numbers. Exam patterns, vacancies and schedules change from year to year. Always confirm the current details in the latest notification on the Union Public Service Commission website .
