The most common mistake in the first year is buying too many books. Every extra book is another thing you will not revise.
Start with the syllabus and the papers
Print the UPSC syllabus. Put the last ten years of Prelims and Mains papers next to it. Every book you buy should earn its place against those two documents.
One book per subject, read three times
Pick one standard book per subject and commit to reading it three times rather than three books once. Add a second source only for the parts the papers keep asking about and your book covers thinly.
Add practice from day one
A notebook for answers and a set of previous-year questions matter as much as any subject book. Reading without writing is the second most common first-year mistake.
When to add more
After your first full revision cycle and one mock test series, look at where you lost marks. That tells you which book to add. Nothing else does.
