How to prepare the UP-specific GS papers

The introduction of two Uttar Pradesh papers transformed UPPSC Mains. Together, GS V and GS VI carry 400 marks — more than the Essay and General Hindi combined. Yet because they are new, candidates face three problems: few previous papers to learn from, a flood of low-quality notes, and a syllabus that ranges from Harappan sites to the state budget. This guide offers a method.

Subject-wise approach

1. History and culture (GS V)

• Chronological spine: ancient (Harappan and Vedic sites, mahajanapadas, Buddhism, Kushanas, Guptas, Harsha), medieval (Sultanate, Sharqis, Mughals, Awadh), modern (1857, national movement, revolutionaries, peasant movements, Quit India).
• Thematic culture: architecture, music, dance, painting, crafts, festivals, fairs, literature, languages.
• Method: make a timeline and a culture table (form, region, features, key figures).

2. Polity and governance (GS V)

• State executive, legislature, judiciary (Allahabad High Court and its Lucknow bench).
• Local bodies — panchayats and urban bodies in UP.
• Police administration and commissionerates.
• Lokayukta, state commissions, e-governance, citizen charters.
• Method: combine with GS II; add UP facts to each national topic.

3. Economy (GS VI)

• Size, growth, sectors, per capita income; budget; debt.
• Industrial policy; investment summits; ODOP; MSMEs.
• Infrastructure — expressways, airports, power.
• Method: use the UP budget and official reports for data.

4. Agriculture (GS VI)

• Crops (wheat, rice, sugarcane, potato, pulses), irrigation, horticulture, dairy, fisheries.
• Marketing, cane dues, farmer schemes.

5. Geography and environment (GS VI)

• Physiography (Bhabar–Terai, Ganga plain, southern plateau), rivers, climate, soils, forests, minerals, wildlife, wetlands.
• Environmental issues: Ganga, air quality in the NCR, groundwater, climate change.
• Method: maps — draw UP's rivers, divisions, protected areas and mineral belts repeatedly.

Practise answers

• Write two UP answers a week from the start of Mains preparation.
• Use the national + UP structure: begin with the national context, then focus on UP.
• Include one data point and one example in every answer.

Example question: "Discuss the role of ODOP in promoting employment in Uttar Pradesh."

A strong answer might open like this: "Launched on UP Diwas, 24 January 2018, the One District One Product scheme identifies a traditional product in each district — brassware in Moradabad, glass in Firozabad, carpets in Bhadohi — and supports it with finance, training, common facilities and marketing." That single sentence gives a date, the idea, three examples and the scheme's components.

The body would then discuss how ODOP creates employment (labour-intensive crafts, artisans and small units), how it links to exports and GI branding, and what challenges remain — credit, design, wages, competition from machine-made goods. The conclusion would propose improvements: stronger common facility centres, e-commerce links, fair wages and cleaner technology in polluting clusters.

Notice what makes this answer "UP-specific": not a paragraph about "the importance of MSMEs in India", but named districts, a date, and a realistic assessment.

Judging a UP source

Because UP material is scattered, you will often find two sources disagreeing. A few rules help:

• Official beats unofficial — a department website or government order beats a GK booklet.
• Recent beats old — scheme amounts and project statuses change often.
• Primary beats secondary — the Census table beats a newspaper's summary of it.
• When unsure, generalise — "over a hundred sugar mills" is safer than a precise number you cannot confirm.

Revision

• Revise GS V and VI weekly — they are too large to leave until the end.
• Before the Mains, revise the timeline, culture table, maps, data bank and examples bank.
