A bank clerk's pay is set by wage agreements between the banks (through the Indian Banks' Association) and the employee unions, called bipartite settlements. The same structure applies across public sector banks, with small differences in some allowances and benefits.

Coaching sites quote an "in-hand salary" figure, and it is usually out of date within months. That is because two of the biggest parts of pay change on their own: dearness allowance moves with inflation, and house rent allowance depends on where you are posted. It is more useful to understand how the figure is built, so you can work it out yourself for any city and any quarter.

The pay scale, stage by stage

The scale is written as a chain: 24050-1340/3-28070-1650/3-33020-2000/4-41020-2340/7-57400-4400/1-61800-2680/1-64480. Read it like this: start at ₹24,050, add ₹1,340 a year for 3 years to reach ₹28,070, then ₹1,650 a year for 3 years, and so on.

StageYearly incrementNumber of incrementsBasic pay at end of stage
Start——₹24,050
1₹1,3403₹28,070
2₹1,6503₹33,020
3₹2,0004₹41,020
4₹2,3407₹57,400
5₹4,4001₹61,800
6₹2,6801₹64,480

Check the chain yourself. 24,050 + (3 × 1,340) = 24,050 + 4,020 = 28,070. Then 28,070 + (3 × 1,650) = 28,070 + 4,950 = 33,020. Then 33,020 + (4 × 2,000) = 41,020. Then 41,020 + (7 × 2,340) = 41,020 + 16,380 = 57,400. The last two steps give 61,800 and 64,480. In all there are 19 yearly increments from the starting basic to the top of the scale.

Some banks also give extra increments for passing the JAIIB and CAIIB exams, and for graduation in some cases. That moves you along the chain faster.

How the salary is built

ComponentWhat it is
Basic payYour position in the scale above; rises with each yearly increment
Dearness allowance (DA)A percentage of basic pay, linked to a consumer price index and revised every quarter
House rent allowance (HRA)A percentage of basic pay, higher in bigger cities; not paid if you live in bank-leased housing
Special allowanceA percentage of basic pay fixed by the settlement for clerical staff; DA is also paid on it
Transport and other allowancesAs per the settlement and the bank's rules, for example officiating or hill-area allowances

Working out gross pay: a worked example

The numbers below are assumptions for illustration only, chosen to keep the arithmetic clean. Replace them with the current DA rate and your bank's HRA and special allowance rates.

Suppose a new clerk has basic pay of ₹24,050, the special allowance is assumed at 20% of basic, DA is assumed at 30% of (basic + special allowance), and HRA at 10% of basic.

  1. Special allowance = 20% of 24,050 = 4,810.
  2. Basic + special allowance = 24,050 + 4,810 = 28,860.
  3. DA = 30% of 28,860 = 8,658.
  4. HRA = 10% of 24,050 = 2,405.
  5. Gross (before other allowances) = 24,050 + 4,810 + 8,658 + 2,405 = ₹39,923.

Now change one thing. If the same clerk were posted where HRA is assumed at 8%, HRA becomes 1,924 (8% of 24,050), and gross falls by 2,405 − 1,924 = ₹481. That is how two clerks who joined on the same day can earn different amounts.

Deductions

  • Contribution to the National Pension System, since staff who joined public sector banks from 1 April 2010 are covered by NPS rather than the old pension. The bank also contributes.
  • Professional tax in states that levy it, and income tax if your income crosses the taxable limit.
  • Union or association dues, if you join one.
  • Repayments of any staff loans.

Gross pay minus these is your in-hand pay.

Benefits beyond salary

  • Medical cover through the bank's scheme or group insurance.
  • Leave: casual, privilege (earned) and sick leave, as per the settlement.
  • Leave fare concession for travel, at set intervals.
  • Staff loans for housing, vehicles and education, usually at concessional rates.
  • Pension through NPS, with a contribution from the bank.

Promotions

Clerks can become officers through their bank's internal promotion process. The usual route:

  1. Clerk (CSA)
  2. Junior Management Grade Scale I (officer), through a written test and/or interview after a minimum period of service
  3. Further officer scales, on the same path as officers recruited directly

The minimum years of service, the test and the weight given to seniority differ between banks. Many clerks also keep appearing for the PO exam while they work, since they already know banking from the inside. The clerk or PO guide compares the two routes.

The JAIIB and CAIIB exams of the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance are worth taking early. They build real banking knowledge, and in many banks they bring increments and help in promotion.

Is the salary enough?

For many graduates, especially in smaller towns, a clerk's salary with allowances, leave and job security is attractive. In big cities living costs are higher, but HRA is higher too. Think of it as the starting point of a career with a clear path to officer grades, not as a fixed figure.

Quick check

  1. What sets the pay for bank clerks? Bipartite settlements.
  2. Which allowance changes every quarter? Dearness allowance.
  3. What is the basic pay after the first three increments? 24,050 + 3 × 1,340 = ₹28,070.
  4. What is the basic pay after six increments? 28,070 + 3 × 1,650 = ₹33,020.
  5. Why can two clerks who joined on the same day earn different amounts? HRA depends on the city of posting, and other allowances vary.
  6. Name one exam that helps a clerk's career. JAIIB or CAIIB.

What to do next

  • Check the pay details in this year's notification and note the starting basic.
  • Redo the worked example with the current DA rate.
  • Read what a clerk actually does to judge the job, not just the pay.

A note on dates and numbers. Exam patterns, vacancies and schedules change from year to year. Always confirm the current details in the latest notification on the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection website .
