In this guide
Eligibility sounds like a formality. It is not. A candidate can clear the prelims, the mains and the interview and still lose the job at document verification, because a result was declared a week late, a caste certificate was in the wrong format, or the name on the marksheet did not match the name on the application.
So check eligibility before you invest months, and arrange the papers that prove it before you need them. This guide goes through each condition, shows how to work out your own age window, and ends with a checklist.
Education
- A degree (graduation) in any discipline from a university recognised by the Government of India, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government.
- There is no minimum percentage. A pass degree is enough. You do, however, have to state the percentage you obtained, and if your university gives a CGPA you must convert it using the university's own rule.
- You must hold the degree on the date given in the notification. In the 2026 cycle this was reported as the last day of online registration (21 July 2026), and you must be able to produce the marksheet or certificate showing the result was declared by then.
Final-year students can still start preparing. Many do. Just be honest with yourself about which cycle you are actually eligible for, and treat an earlier attempt as practice.
Age
The basic limit is 20 to 30 years, counted on a cut-off date in the notification. For the 2026 cycle the date was reported as 1 July 2026, and the window as: born not earlier than 2 July 1996 and not later than 1 July 2006, both dates inclusive.
Read that carefully. "Up to 30" in IBPS language means you must not have completed 30 on the cut-off date. Someone born on 1 July 1996 turns 30 exactly on 1 July 2026, and falls outside the window.
Relaxation by category
| Category | Relaxation | Upper age (with a 30-year base) |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS | None | 30 |
| OBC (non-creamy layer) | 3 years | 33 |
| SC / ST | 5 years | 35 |
| PwBD (General / EWS) | 10 years | 40 |
| PwBD (OBC) | 13 years | 43 |
| PwBD (SC / ST) | 15 years | 45 |
| Ex-servicemen | As per government rules (reported as 5 years) | Check the notification |
The minimum age of 20 does not relax for anyone. EWS candidates get no age relaxation.
Worked examples (cut-off date 1 July 2026)
- A General candidate born on 15 March 1996. The window starts at 2 July 1996. March 1996 is earlier, so the candidate is 30 on the cut-off date and not eligible.
- The same birth date, OBC (non-creamy layer). Three years' relaxation moves the earliest birth date back to 2 July 1993. March 1996 is inside the window, so the candidate is eligible, provided the OBC certificate is valid.
- An SC candidate born on 1 July 1991. Five years' relaxation gives an earliest birth date of 2 July 1991. The candidate misses by one day and is not eligible.
- Any candidate born on 10 August 2006. That is after 1 July 2006, so the candidate is under 20 and not eligible in any category.
Attempts
IBPS has not capped the number of attempts for PO in recent notifications. You can apply every year as long as you are within the age limit. That is one reason the exam is so crowded: many candidates try more than once.
This is different from SBI PO, a separate exam, which does limit attempts by category. If you are preparing for both, see how IBPS PO fits with other bank exams.
Other conditions
- Nationality: an Indian citizen, or certain other categories allowed by government rules (for example subjects of Nepal or Bhutan, and some persons of Indian origin), who then need an eligibility certificate.
- Computer literacy: operating and working knowledge of computer systems is mandatory. Read the exact clause, since some notifications have asked for proof such as a certificate or a computer subject studied at school or college.
- Credit history: in past cycles, banks asked that candidates have a healthy credit history at joining, and some mentioned a minimum credit score. The 2026 notification is reported to have dropped the specific score clause, but a bank may still check your credit record under its own policy at joining.
Documents to arrange early
| Document | Why it matters | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Class 10 certificate | Proof of date of birth | The date must match your application exactly |
| Graduation marksheets and degree or provisional certificate | Proof of qualification and result date | The result declaration date must be on or before the cut-off |
| OBC (NCL) certificate | Reservation and age relaxation | Must be in the central government format and within the validity the notification sets |
| EWS income and asset certificate | Reservation | Issued for the financial year the notification specifies |
| SC / ST certificate | Reservation and relaxation | Central government format |
| PwBD certificate | Reservation, relaxation, scribe or compensatory time | Issued by a competent medical authority |
| Photo ID | Identity on exam day and at verification | Name spelling must match |
| Photo, signature, left thumb impression, handwritten declaration | Application upload | Sizes and formats are specified; a poor scan can cause rejection |
Watch the OBC certificate in particular. A state OBC list and the central OBC list are not always the same, so check that your community is on the central list.
Fees
The application fee was reported as ₹850 for General, EWS and OBC candidates and ₹175 for SC, ST and PwBD candidates in the 2026 cycle. Fees are revised from time to time, so check the notification.
Your eligibility checklist
- My degree result was (or will be) declared on or before the date in the notification.
- I know my percentage, converted from CGPA by my university's rule if needed.
- My birth date falls inside my category's window, worked out as above.
- My name and date of birth match on my Class 10 certificate, marksheets and ID.
- My category certificate is in the central government format and valid for this cycle.
- I have no overdue loan or card payments.
- I have scanned my photo, signature, thumb impression and declaration in the required formats.
Once this is settled, you can put the question aside and focus on preparation. Start with the exam pattern and what the job actually involves.
A note on dates and numbers. Exam patterns, vacancies and schedules change from year to year. Always confirm the current details in the latest notification on the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection website .
