LIC AAO eligibility: age, education and posts

Eligibility sounds like the easy part of an exam. In practice, it is where months of preparation can be lost at document verification. It happens when a result arrives a week after the cut-off date or a date of birth falls one day outside the window. A category certificate in the wrong format can do the same. LIC checks documents only at the interview stage, so a mistake here may not surface until you are nearly through.

This guide covers the rules from the 2025 notification and shows how to apply them to your own case.

Nationality

The 2025 notification invites applications from eligible Indian citizens.

Age

For AAO (Generalist) in 2025, the minimum age was 21 years (completed) and the maximum 30 years, both as on 1 August 2025. The notification turns this into exact dates. You had to be born not earlier than 2 August 1995 and not later than 1 August 2004, both days inclusive.

Always work from those "born between" dates rather than counting years in your head. They settle the edge cases that mental arithmetic gets wrong.

Relaxation in the upper age limit

The ex-servicemen relaxation applies to those who have rendered five years of military service and meet the release conditions in the notification. The 2025 list has no separate age relaxation for EWS candidates. EWS is a reservation category for vacancies, not an age category. You must submit the certificates for any relaxation at the interview, and you cannot change your category after you register.

Worked examples (cut-off date 1 August 2025)

1. A general-category candidate born on 2 August 1995. This is the earliest permitted date of birth, so the candidate is eligible.
2. A general-category candidate born on 1 August 1995. This is one day before the window opens, so the candidate is not eligible. They complete 30 years on the cut-off date itself, and the notification's dates exclude them.
3. An OBC candidate born on 20 November 1992. Their upper limit is 30 + 3 = 33, so the window opens three years earlier, on 2 August 1992. 20 November 1992 falls after that date, so the candidate is eligible. They are 32 on the cut-off date.
4. A candidate born on 5 August 2004. The latest permitted date of birth is 1 August 2004, so this candidate is too young for this cycle. They will be eligible in the next one if the cut-off date is similar.

Educational qualification

For AAO (Generalist), the requirement is a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised Indian university or institution. The Generalist notification does not prescribe a minimum percentage.

Three conditions matter more than the degree itself:

• Result by the cut-off date. Your result must be declared on or before the eligibility date (1 August 2025 in the last cycle). The date that counts is the date of passing on your mark sheet or provisional certificate. You must produce proof of it at the interview.
• No equivalent qualifications. The notification says LIC will not consider equivalent qualifications. The degree must match the prescribed qualification and come from a university or institute recognised by the Government of India or approved by the relevant regulator.
• Final-year students. If your final result is not declared by the cut-off date, you are not eligible for that cycle, even if you have written your last paper.

Specialist and engineering posts

Specialist AAO and Assistant Engineer posts have their own qualifications, and some ask for professional membership and work experience. In 2025 these were CA, Company Secretary, Actuarial, Insurance Specialist and Legal, plus Assistant Engineer (Civil and Electrical). The upper age limit was also 32 for CA and Legal, not 30. In 2025, candidates could apply for one post only across the Generalist, Specialist and Assistant Engineer posts. If someone submitted more than one application, LIC kept only the latest valid one and forfeited the fees paid on the others.

Attempts and fees

The notifications we checked set no limit on attempts. The age limit is the effective cap.

The 2025 fee was ₹700 plus transaction charges and GST for most candidates, and ₹85 in intimation charges plus transaction charges and GST for SC, ST and PwBD candidates. The fee is non-refundable.

Read the service conditions before you apply

These conditions are not eligibility rules, but they belong in your decision. The 2025 Generalist notification states:

• Posting. Most vacancies are in mofussil (smaller-town) branches. After training, selected candidates are posted for at least five years in mofussil branches outside their home zones. The 2023 notification said three years, so this has become stricter.
• Probation. One year, which can be extended up to two years.
• Guarantee bond. You undertake to serve LIC for at least four years, including probation. If you leave earlier, you are liable to pay liquidated damages of ₹5,00,000, and you must execute a deed of indemnity.

If a five-year posting outside your home zone is not workable for you, it is better to know that now.

Document checklist

• Your name is spelled the same way on every document.
• Your photo, signature, left thumb impression and handwritten declaration are scanned to the size limits in the notification.
• You have a working email address and mobile number for the whole cycle, because LIC may send call letters and updates by email.

Quick check

1. The cut-off date is 1 August. A general candidate was born on 1 August, exactly 30 years earlier. Are they eligible? No. The permitted window begins the next day, as example 2 shows.
2. What is the upper age limit for a PwBD candidate from the OBC category applying for a Generalist post? 43. That is 30 + 13.
3. A student's final-year result is declared ten days after the cut-off date. Can they apply? No. The result must be declared on or before the cut-off date.
4. Does the Generalist post require a minimum percentage in graduation? No. The notification asks for a degree in any discipline, with no minimum percentage.
5. Can you apply for both AAO (Generalist) and AAO (Legal) in the same cycle? No, going by the 2025 rules. Only one application is retained.
