Answer writing for MPPSC Mains

In the MPPSC Mains, your knowledge reaches the examiner only through your writing. Two candidates with identical knowledge can differ by dozens of marks because one writes precise, structured answers of the right length, and the other writes long, unfocused paragraphs. The MPPSC format — with very short, short and long questions in each GS paper — makes this skill even more important.

Three answer types

Read the question

Identify the directive word, the parts of the question, its scope (India, MP or both) and the word limit.

Worked example 1: a very short answer

Question: Who was Raja Bhoj?

Answer: A Paramara ruler of Malwa (11th century), famed as a scholar-king and builder; associated with Bhojpur temple and Dhar.

In one sentence: who, when, where, why remembered.

Worked example 2: a short answer

Question: Explain the significance of the Narmada for Madhya Pradesh.

Answer: The Narmada, rising at Amarkantak, is MP's lifeline — the state's largest river, flowing west through a rift valley to the Arabian Sea. It supplies irrigation and drinking water through projects such as Indira Sagar, Omkareshwar and Bargi, generates hydroelectricity, supports fertile farmland in the Narmada valley, and holds deep cultural importance, with pilgrimages such as the Narmada Parikrama and sacred towns like Omkareshwar and Maheshwar.

Worked example 3: a long answer outline

Question: Evaluate MP's Public Services Guarantee Act as a governance reform.

• Introduction: In 2010, MP became the first state to guarantee time-bound delivery of notified public services by law.
• Features: notified services with time limits; designated officers; appeals; penalties for delay; later expanded through Lok Seva Kendras and online services.
• Achievements: faster certificates and services; accountability; a model copied by other states.
• Limitations: awareness gaps; digital exclusion; capacity at the lowest level; focus on disposal rather than quality.
• Conclusion: a strong framework that needs continued investment in capacity, awareness and grievance redress.

Using MP examples and data

Record the source and year for every figure you plan to use.

Diagrams and maps

A small, neat map of MP showing the Narmada, the Satpura and Vindhya ranges, or tiger reserves can add value to a geography or environment answer. Flowcharts work for processes (how a scheme reaches beneficiaries); tables work for comparisons.

Hindi-medium tips

Most MPPSC candidates write in Hindi. Use standard terms consistently (जवाबदेही, विकेंद्रीकरण, लोक सेवा गारंटी), keep sentences short, and watch spelling and gender agreement.

Time management

• Allocate time in proportion to marks.
• Do not over-write very short answers.
• If time runs short, write the last answers in clear points rather than leaving them blank.
• Leave a few minutes to check for missed questions.
