In this guide
Ask a successful RAS officer what made the difference in their Mains, and many will say something surprising: the short answers. In a paper with forty or more questions, a large share of the marks lies in two-mark and five-mark questions. Candidates who write them precisely and quickly collect those marks steadily; candidates who ramble, or who leave questions out for lack of time, lose them one by one.
This guide covers all three answer lengths, with worked examples.
The three answer types
| Type | Typical length | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Short | About 15 words | One precise sentence — a definition or a key fact |
| Medium | About 50 words | A compact paragraph or three to four points, ideally with an example |
| Long | About 100 words | A brief introduction, a structured body and a one-line conclusion |
Short answers: the art of one sentence
A short answer is not a shortened long answer. It is a single, complete, precise statement. The examiner is checking whether you know the essential fact.
Question: What was the Treaty of 1818 in the context of Rajasthan?
Answer: Subsidiary treaties signed in 1817–18 by most Rajputana states with the East India Company, accepting British paramountcy in return for protection.
That is about 20 words, and it contains everything: date, parties, and meaning.
Question: Define "social audit".
Answer: Verification of a public programme's implementation by its beneficiaries and the community, through public hearings and record checks.
Tips for short answers:
- Start directly with the answer — no introduction.
- Include the one key word the examiner is looking for (e.g., "paramountcy", "community verification").
- Add a date, place or name if relevant.
- Do not exceed the limit by much; it wastes time.
Medium answers: three or four points
A medium answer should cover the main dimensions of a question in about 50 words.
Question: Explain the significance of Panchayati Raj's inauguration at Nagaur.
Answer: On 2 October 1959, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated democratic decentralisation at Nagaur, making Rajasthan the first state to adopt the three-tier Panchayati Raj system recommended by the Balwantrai Mehta Committee. It symbolised people's participation in rural development and became a model for other states, later strengthened by the 73rd Amendment.
This answer gives the date, who, the committee, the significance and the later link — in about 55 words.
Long answers: structure in miniature
A 100-word answer needs structure, but in miniature: one or two lines of introduction, the core in points or short paragraphs, and a line of conclusion.
Question: Discuss the causes and consequences of desertification in western Rajasthan.
Answer outline:
- Introduction: Desertification is land degradation in dry areas; western Rajasthan, part of the Thar, is among India's most affected regions.
- Causes: low and erratic rainfall; wind erosion; overgrazing by large livestock populations; expansion of cultivation into marginal lands; over-extraction of groundwater; mining.
- Consequences: loss of soil fertility; falling crop and fodder yields; sand dune movement onto roads and canals; migration and poverty.
- Conclusion: Shelterbelts, dune stabilisation, controlled grazing and water harvesting — as practised in parts of the Indira Gandhi Canal area — show the way forward.
Read the directive word
| Directive | What it asks |
|---|---|
| Define / परिभाषित कीजिए | A precise meaning |
| Explain / स्पष्ट कीजिए | Meaning plus reasons |
| Describe / वर्णन कीजिए | Features or events |
| Discuss / विवेचना कीजिए | Several aspects, balanced |
| Evaluate / मूल्यांकन कीजिए | Strengths and weaknesses, with a judgement |
| Differentiate / अंतर स्पष्ट कीजिए | Clear points of difference — a two-column table works well |
Use Rajasthan facts
Wherever relevant, add a Rajasthan example: a district, a fort, a dynasty, a scheme, a law, a river or a statistic. A medium answer on water harvesting that mentions johads, tankas and baoris is immediately stronger than one that speaks only of "traditional methods".
Diagrams
Simple diagrams save words: a sketch map of Rajasthan's physiographic regions, a flowchart of how a bill becomes law, a table comparing two concepts. Keep them small and labelled.
Time management across forty-plus questions
Divide time in proportion to marks, and move steadily through the paper. A practical approach is to attempt all short questions first — quickly and confidently — then medium, then long. Keep ten minutes at the end to review and fill any gaps. Never leave a short question blank if you have any relevant knowledge; a partially correct answer may still earn marks.
Hindi-medium tips
Most RAS candidates write in Hindi. Use standard terms consistently (पंचायती राज, सामाजिक अंकेक्षण, मरुस्थलीकरण), keep sentences short, and watch spelling and gender agreement.
A daily routine
- Ten short answers a day from any unit — timed at one minute each.
- Three medium answers a day — five minutes each.
- One long answer a day — eight to ten minutes.
- Weekly, one full paper under exam conditions.
Within two months, most candidates find that their short answers become sharp and their speed improves dramatically.
