RRB NTPC CBT 2 strategy: the stage that decides your rank

If CBT 1 is the gate, CBT 2 is the race. Its normalised marks decide your rank for almost every post, and for Station Master and Traffic Assistant they make up 70% of the final merit, with the CBAT making up the rest.

The candidates in the CBT 2 hall have all cleared a screening test, so the field is stronger than it was a few months ago. A score that felt comfortable in CBT 1 mocks can be ordinary here. That is the mindset to start with.

What changes from CBT 1

The subjects are the same, but the clock is tighter, the competition is stronger and every mark now moves your rank. Candidates who clear CBT 1 comfortably still lose out here if they do not raise their speed.

Use the gap well

There are usually some months between CBT 1 and CBT 2. This is the most wasted stretch of the whole cycle. Many candidates wait for the CBT 1 result, then panic.

1. Start CBT 2 preparation the day after CBT 1. If you do not clear it, the work still helps next cycle. If you do, you are months ahead.
2. Deepen General Awareness. Move from one-liners to understanding: why a river flows east, what an article of the Constitution actually says, how a scheme works.
3. Build Maths speed with timed sectional tests of 35 questions.
4. Start your skill test if your preferred posts need one: typing for the clerk and accounts typist posts, CBAT familiarity for Station Master and Traffic Assistant.

A simple split for this period: GA 40% of your time, Maths 30%, Reasoning 20%, skill test 10%. Adjust it to your weak spots.

A time budget

The logic is the same as in CBT 1: bank time in GA, spend it on Maths. The difference is that the margins are thinner, so your Round 1 cut-off should be stricter. In CBT 2, mark and skip any question that will take more than about 75 seconds.

Accuracy versus attempts

With −⅓ for a wrong answer, a few extra attempts at low accuracy can lower your score. Compare two candidates in the same shift.

Worked example.

Candidate B attempted ten more questions and got two fewer right answers. The extra attempts were mostly guesses, and they cost six marks. At CBT 2 level, six marks can be the difference between a Level 6 post and no post.

Section by section

General Awareness (50 questions)

GA is the largest section and the one where a strong candidate can pull ahead fastest, because good preparation turns 20-second questions into sure marks.

• Revise science up to Class 10: physics, chemistry and biology basics are asked every year.
• Cover history, geography, polity and economy at the NCERT level, and static GK: dams, national parks, dances, awards, books and authors, firsts.
• Keep current affairs for roughly the last year: schemes, sports events, summits, appointments.
• Read every option. CBT 2 often has two close options, such as two neighbouring states or two similar-sounding schemes.

Mathematics (35 questions)

• Arithmetic is still the core: percentage, ratio, profit and loss, interest, time and work, speed and distance, averages.
• Expect a few longer questions and some from mensuration, algebra, geometry and statistics.
• Learn fraction-percentage pairs, squares to 30 and cubes to 15 until they are automatic.
• Practise 35 questions in 35 minutes at least three times a week in the last month.

Reasoning (35 questions)

• This is where careless errors cost the most, because most questions are solvable by everyone.
• Practise puzzles, seating arrangements and syllogisms, which tend to be longer at this stage.
• For coding and series, write the pattern down rather than holding it in your head.

Skill tests alongside

Skill tests follow CBT 2 closely, and there is little time to start from nothing after the result. Typing speed in particular builds slowly, over weeks. Start with our guides on the CBAT and the typing test.

The last month

• Take a full CBT 2 mock at least every other day, at your shift time.
• Analyse each mock the same day. Write every mistake in an error notebook.
• Revise GA from your own short notes, not new sources.
• Keep one light day a week. Tired revision is poor revision.

On exam day

• Stick to your time plan and your section order. Do not change strategy in the hall.
• If a section goes badly, do not let it spill into the next. Reset and continue.
• Remember that everyone in your shift faces the same paper, and that marks are normalised across shifts.

Common mistakes in CBT 2

• Relaxing for weeks after CBT 1 and starting CBT 2 preparation only after the result.
• Using CBT 1 time splits unchanged. Nine fewer seconds per question (45 instead of 54) needs a sharper plan.
• Pushing attempts to "catch up" in a hard shift, and adding penalties instead.
• Leaving typing or CBAT practice until the CBT 2 result.
