RRB NTPC eligibility: age, education and medical standards

Every cycle, some candidates clear CBT 1 and CBT 2 and then lose the job at document verification. The reason is almost never marks. It is a result that came out a month late, a caste certificate in the wrong format, or a date of birth that does not match across documents.

Eligibility takes an hour to check properly. Do it before you spend a year preparing.

Education

Three points need care.

The 50% condition for undergraduate posts. Recent undergraduate notices have asked for at least 50% aggregate marks in Class 12. As reported, this condition does not apply to SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates, or to candidates who hold a higher qualification such as a degree. Check the exact wording in your CEN.

The qualification deadline. You must have passed by the date the notice fixes. Candidates "appearing" in their final exam, or awaiting results, have generally not been eligible. If your degree result is expected after that date, you cannot apply for graduate posts in that cycle, though you may still be eligible for the undergraduate posts through Class 12.

Distance and open degrees. A degree through distance mode is generally accepted if the university and programme were recognised at the time. Keep proof of recognition handy in case it is questioned.

Age limits

Age is counted on a fixed date printed in the notice, often 1 January of the following year, not on the day you apply. The CEN usually also prints the exact window of birth dates that fits the range. Use that window, not your own arithmetic, for the final check.

These ranges can shift. The 2024 cycle (CEN 05/2024 and 06/2024) gave a one-time relaxation of three years, so the limits that year were reported as 18 to 36 for graduate posts and 18 to 33 for undergraduate posts. Never assume last year's limit applies this year.

Relaxations (typical)

Other groups, such as some serving railway staff and candidates domiciled in certain areas, have had relaxations too. Read the relaxation table in your notice.

Worked examples: are you within the age limit?

Assume, for these examples, that age is counted on 1 January 2027 and the usual ranges apply.

Example 1. A candidate born on 15 August 1992, OBC (non-creamy layer), applying for graduate posts.

1. On 1 January 2027 they are 34 years old (35th birthday due in August 2027).
2. The unreserved upper limit is 33, so without relaxation they are too old.
3. OBC relaxation adds 3 years: 33 + 3 = 36.
4. 34 is within 36, so they are eligible.

Example 2. A graduate born on 10 March 1996, unreserved.

1. On 1 January 2027 they are 30 years and about 9 months old (31st birthday due in March 2027).
2. Graduate limit 33: eligible.
3. Undergraduate limit 30: an upper limit of 30 generally means you have not yet turned 31 on the cut-off date, so they are eligible here too. Confirm it against the birth-date window printed in the CEN, which settles every close case.

Example 3. A candidate born on 5 February 2009, applying for undergraduate posts.

1. On 1 January 2027 they are 17 (18th birthday due in February 2027).
2. The minimum is 18, so they are not eligible this cycle, even with Class 12 done.

Applying at both levels

Graduate and undergraduate posts come in separate notifications. Recent cycles have allowed a graduate to apply to both, with separate applications and separate fees. Within each notification, though, you may apply to only one RRB. More than one application in the same notification has led to rejection. See our guide on choosing your RRB before you pick.

Nationality

Candidates must be Indian citizens, or belong to the other categories permitted by government rules (for example, certain subjects of Nepal and Bhutan). Almost every applicant is covered by the first.

Medical standards

Railway posts carry medical categories, mainly about eyesight. You are examined after document verification, and only for the posts you are being considered for.

Application fee

Recent notices have charged ₹500 for most candidates, with ₹400 refunded after appearing in CBT 1. A reduced fee of ₹250, refunded in full (less bank charges) after CBT 1, has applied to SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, minority and economically backward class candidates. Documents to start arranging now

• Class 10 certificate, the accepted proof of date of birth.
• Class 12 marksheet (undergraduate posts) or degree certificate and marksheets (graduate posts).
• Caste certificate in the central government format, if you claim SC, ST or OBC. A state-format certificate is a common reason for trouble.
• OBC non-creamy layer certificate valid for the period the notice asks for.
• EWS certificate for the correct financial year, if claimed.
• PwBD certificate, if applicable.
• Photo ID such as Aadhaar or voter ID, with your name spelt exactly as on your Class 10 certificate.

Before you apply: checklist

• My qualification is complete by the date in the notice.
• I meet the Class 12 marks condition, or am exempt from it.
• My age fits the birth-date window, with any relaxation I can prove.
• My name and date of birth match on every document.
• My category certificate is in the central format and currently valid.
• I know my eyesight against A-2, A-3, B-2 and C-2.
