SSC GD eligibility: age, education and domicile

The eligibility rules for SSC GD Constable look simple: pass Class 10 and be the right age. But because vacancies are allotted state by state — and within states, sometimes by special areas — your domicile and your certificates matter as much as your marks. Read the rules carefully before you apply.

Education

• Class 10 (matriculation) pass from a recognised board.
• The result must be declared by the cut-off date given in the notification.

Age

• Typically 18 to 23 years, calculated on a cut-off date given in the notification.
• Your Class 10 certificate is the proof of date of birth.

Age relaxation (typical)

Domicile and state-wise vacancies

• Vacancies are allotted by state and union territory, and in some cases for border areas and militancy-affected districts.
• You compete for vacancies in your state of domicile.
• A valid domicile certificate (or permanent residence certificate) is required. If you claim a border-area or militancy-affected district vacancy, you need a certificate showing residence in that area.

Category certificates

• SC, ST and OBC candidates need certificates in the central government format.
• OBC candidates need non-creamy-layer status valid for the required period.
• EWS candidates need an EWS certificate for the relevant year.

Physical requirements

You must also meet the physical standards (height, chest for men) and pass the running test. These are covered in detail in our Physical Test guide.

Other conditions

• Candidates must be Indian citizens (or belong to other categories permitted by the notification).
• Candidates must meet medical standards, including eyesight standards.

A checklist before applying

• My Class 10 result will be declared by the cut-off date.
• My age is within the limit on the cut-off date (with any relaxation I'm entitled to).
• I have a valid domicile certificate for my state.
• If I claim a border-area or special-district vacancy, I have the right certificate.
• My category certificate is in the central format and valid.
• I meet (or can meet with training) the height and chest standards.
• My name and date of birth are the same on all documents.

Common eligibility mistakes

• Counting age from today's date. Age is counted on the cut-off date given in the notification, not on the day you apply.
• Assuming a relaxation applies. Each relaxation needs the right certificate, in the right format, issued within the right dates.
• Applying for the wrong state. Vacancies are allotted by state of domicile. If you apply for one state but your domicile certificate is from another, you can lose your selection.
• Result after the cut-off. If your Class 10 result is declared after the cut-off date, you may not be eligible for that cycle.
• Name or date-of-birth mismatch. The details in your application must match your Class 10 certificate exactly.

What to do this week

1. Download the latest notification and read the eligibility section twice.
2. Work out your age on the cut-off date on paper.
3. Put all your certificates in one folder and check the name and date of birth on each.
4. If anything is missing or wrong, start getting it made or corrected now — it can take weeks.
