For many candidates, the SSC GD job means more than a uniform. It means security: a permanent central government post with a fixed pay scale, allowances, medical care and a promotion ladder. Your family will ask how much you will earn. This guide shows how to work it out yourself, so you are not misled by numbers on social media.

Pay level and basic pay

PostPay level (7th CPC)Basic pay range
Constable (GD) in the CAPFs, Rifleman (GD), SSFLevel 3₹21,700 to ₹69,100
Sepoy (NCB)Level 1 (as in recent notifications)₹18,000 to ₹56,900

You join at the first step of your level, ₹21,700 for Level 3. The top figure (₹69,100) is where the level ends after many years of increments, not what you earn at the start.

What goes on top of basic pay

AllowanceHow it works
Dearness Allowance (DA)A percentage of basic pay, revised twice a year to match prices. Reported at 60% from January 2026
House Rent Allowance (HRA)30%, 20% or 10% of basic pay, depending on the city class. Not paid if you live in government accommodation
Transport AllowanceA fixed monthly amount by city class, plus DA on it
Risk and hardship allowancesExtra pay for high-altitude, insurgency-affected or border areas
Ration money and uniform allowanceDuty-related support, as per rules

Because of the hardship allowances, two constables at the same level can take home very different amounts depending on where they are posted.

A worked salary example

This is an illustration only. Suppose a new constable is at basic pay ₹21,700, DA is 60%, and they draw HRA at the 10% rate.

  1. Basic pay: ₹21,700.
  2. DA at 60%: 21,700 × 0.60 = ₹13,020.
  3. HRA at 10%: 21,700 × 0.10 = ₹2,170.
  4. Total of these three: 21,700 + 13,020 + 2,170 = ₹36,890.
  5. Pension contribution (NPS) of 10% of basic plus DA: 10% of (21,700 + 13,020) = 10% of 34,720 = ₹3,472 deducted.

So before transport allowance, hardship allowances and small deductions like group insurance, this constable would get about 36,890 − 3,472 = ₹33,418. Redo this sum with the current DA rate when you read it.

How pay grows every year

Each year you get an increment of 3% of basic pay, rounded up to the next ₹100. That is how the pay matrix is built.

YearCalculationBasic pay
JoiningEntry pay₹21,700
After 1 year21,700 × 1.03 = 22,351, rounded up₹22,400
After 2 years22,400 × 1.03 = 23,072, rounded up₹23,100
After 3 years23,100 × 1.03 = 23,793, rounded up₹23,800

DA rises with basic pay, since it is a percentage of it.

Training and probation

  • After selection, recruits go through basic training at a force training centre. It usually lasts several months.
  • Training covers physical fitness, drill, weapons and firing, field craft, law, human rights and first aid.
  • You are paid during training.
  • A probation period follows, during which your work and conduct are watched closely.

For what the training days actually feel like, read training life after selection.

The promotion ladder

RankTypical pay levelUsual route
ConstableLevel 3Entry
Head ConstableLevel 4Seniority, courses or departmental tests
Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI)Level 5Seniority and departmental tests
Sub-Inspector (SI)Level 6Departmental exams or limited competitive exams
Inspector and aboveLevel 7 and aboveFurther promotions

The speed of promotion varies by force and depends on vacancies. Rank names can differ slightly in the Assam Rifles. Some personnel also clear outside exams, such as SSC CPO for Sub-Inspector, while serving, subject to age limits and departmental rules.

MACP: a safety net

If you are not promoted for a long time, the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme moves you to the next pay level after 10, 20 and 30 years of service. You keep your rank, but your pay rises.

Benefits

  • Medical care for you and your family, including the Ayushman CAPF scheme for CAPF personnel.
  • CAPF canteens (Kendriya Police Kalyan Bhandar) with lower prices on household goods.
  • Leave: earned and casual leave as per rules.
  • Pension: new entrants come under the National Pension System (NPS), with an option of the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) introduced in 2025. Pension for CAPF personnel has also been the subject of court cases, so follow official orders.
  • Group insurance and welfare funds.
  • Education support and reserved seats for children in some institutions.

Planning your career

  1. Do well in basic training. It shapes your reputation in the unit.
  2. Take every course offered: weapons, commando, driving, computers, first aid.
  3. Prepare for departmental exams early.
  4. Keep your fitness and a clean service record.

Managing your first salary

  • Open a savings account and keep it separate from daily spending.
  • Save a fixed part of every salary first, then spend.
  • Avoid loans for phones, bikes or gadgets in your first year.
  • Understand your pension choice. Ask your unit's accounts office how NPS, UPS and group insurance work.
  • Plan what you send home so you do not run short.
  • Beware of fraud. Never share your bank OTP or PIN, even with someone claiming to be from your bank or your unit.

Practice

  1. What is the pay level and entry basic pay of a CAPF constable (GD)?
  2. If DA is 60%, what is the DA on a basic pay of ₹21,700?
  3. What will ₹22,400 basic pay become after the next increment?
  4. What rank comes after Head Constable?
  5. After how many years does MACP give a financial upgrade?

Answers:

  1. Level 3, ₹21,700.
  2. 21,700 × 0.60 = ₹13,020.
  3. 22,400 × 1.03 = 23,072, rounded up to ₹23,100.
  4. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI).
  5. After 10, 20 and 30 years of service, if not promoted.
