Every MPSC aspirant eventually asks the same question: where do I learn Maharashtra's history, geography and civics properly? National textbooks cover India as a whole and say little about the state. Coaching booklets are often lists of facts without explanation. The best starting point is hiding in plain sight — the Maharashtra State Board textbooks that students across the state study in school.
Why state board textbooks?
- They cover Maharashtra in depth — the state's physical geography, rivers and regions; its history from the Satavahanas to Samyukta Maharashtra; its social reformers; its local governance.
- They are accurate and balanced — prepared by subject experts through the state's textbook bureau.
- They are available in both Marathi and English, so you can read in the language you will answer in.
- They are free to access online — the State Bureau of Textbook Production and Curriculum Research (Balbharati) makes textbooks available digitally through its e-Balbharati portal.
- Question setters draw on them, especially for Prelims-type factual questions on Maharashtra.
Which books to read
Focus on the subjects and classes that build Maharashtra-specific understanding:

Textbooks are revised periodically, so use the current editions and note which chapters are directly about Maharashtra.
How to combine them with NCERT
A simple sequence:
- Polity: NCERT political science books for concepts; state board civics for Maharashtra's institutions and local government.
- Geography: NCERT geography for physical and Indian geography; state board geography for Maharashtra.
- History: NCERT for the all-India narrative; state board history for Maharashtra's own story.
- Economy: NCERT economics for concepts; the Economic Survey of Maharashtra (later) for the state's economy.
Read one subject at a time, finishing the national and state books for that subject together.
How to read them
First reading — understanding. Read like a story. At the end of each chapter, close the book and explain it aloud in a couple of minutes.
Second reading — for the exam. Mark definitions, processes, cause-and-effect relationships and facts likely to be asked: dates of key events, names of reformers and their organisations, rivers and their tributaries, dams and districts, protected areas.
Make Maharashtra maps. For geography chapters, mark rivers, dams, divisions, national parks and industrial regions on a blank map of Maharashtra. Revise the maps repeatedly.
Link to the syllabus. Note which syllabus line each chapter serves.
What the textbooks do not cover
State board textbooks are a foundation, not the complete preparation. You will need:
- standard reference books for deeper coverage of polity, economy and history;
- the Economic Survey of Maharashtra and budget documents for the state economy;
- current affairs — state schemes, policies and developments;
- answer-writing practice for the descriptive Mains.

By the end of the month, you will have a clear map of Maharashtra-specific content — and will understand far more of what you read in standard books, newspapers and the Economic Survey afterwards.
