The Combined State / Upper Subordinate Services Examination of the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) — known to aspirants simply as UP PCS — is one of the largest state civil services examinations in India. It recruits officers for the state that is home to about a sixth of India's population: Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs), Deputy Superintendents of Police, Block Development Officers, Assistant Commissioners of commercial tax, treasury officers and many others.
In recent years, UPPSC made one of the most significant changes to any state examination: it removed the optional subject from the Mains and introduced two new General Studies papers devoted entirely to Uttar Pradesh. If your study material predates this change, it will mislead you. Start with the current structure.

Stage 1: the Preliminary examination

- Each paper is of two hours.
- There is negative marking — one-third of the marks for a question are deducted for each wrong answer.
- Only GS I is used to decide who qualifies for the Mains, provided the candidate clears CSAT.
The GS I paper covers history (with Indian national movement), Indian and world geography, polity and governance, economy and social development, environment, general science and current events — with Uttar Pradesh increasingly visible in questions.

Each paper is of three hours. Candidates may write in Hindi, English or Urdu (General Hindi excepted).
Two things that make UPPSC different
- General Hindi counts. Unlike many state examinations, where the language paper is only qualifying, UPPSC's 150-mark General Hindi paper adds directly to your merit. A good Hindi score is a real advantage.
- A third of GS is about Uttar Pradesh. GS V and GS VI together carry 400 marks — more than a quarter of the Mains. Candidates who treat UP as a side topic cannot compete.
Stage 3: the interview
- 100 marks.
- The board assesses general awareness, communication, judgement, integrity and suitability for public service in UP.
