Ancient Uttar Pradesh: from Sinauli to the Vedic age

Long before the mahajanapadas, the land that is now Uttar Pradesh was home to Stone Age hunters in the Vindhyas, some of the earliest rice farmers in South Asia, Harappan outposts in the Doab, and the warriors of Sinauli buried with their chariots. A guide to UP's prehistory and early history for GS V and Prelims.

In 2018, archaeologists excavating a burial ground at Sinauli, in Baghpat district, uncovered something no one had seen before in the subcontinent: remains of chariots, placed in burials alongside coffins decorated with copper, swords and shields — dated to around the early second millennium BCE. The discovery reminded historians how much of Uttar Pradesh's deep past is still being revealed. For UPPSC, the prehistory and early history of UP is an increasingly common source of questions.

The Stone Age in UP

Palaeolithic (Old Stone Age)

  • The Belan valley (in the Vindhyan region of Prayagraj and Mirzapur) has one of the most complete sequences of Stone Age cultures in India — from Lower Palaeolithic tools through to later periods.
  • The Son and Belan valleys, and the Vindhyan hills of south UP, were home to hunter-gatherers using stone tools.

Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age)

UP has some of the most important Mesolithic sites in India, especially in the Pratapgarh region of the Ganga plain:

SiteDistrictSignificance
Sarai Nahar RaiPratapgarhMesolithic burials; microliths
MahadahaPratapgarhBurials, including a double burial; animal bones
DamdamaPratapgarhMultiple burials; evidence of settled life
Chopani MandoPrayagraj (Belan valley)Transition towards settled life; early pottery

Early farming

The middle Ganga plain and the Vindhyan fringe hold some of the earliest evidence of rice cultivation in South Asia:

The Harappan frontier in the Doab

The Harappan (Indus–Sarasvati) civilisation extended into western UP:

SiteDistrictSignificance

HulasSaharanpurLate Harappan settlement

Sinauli

  • Where: Baghpat district, western UP.
  • What: a large burial site first excavated in 2005–06, with major discoveries in 2018.
  • Finds: burials with coffins decorated with copper, chariots (with solid wheels), swords, shields, helmets, pottery and ornaments.
  • Date: roughly the early second millennium BCE.
  • Significance: evidence of a warrior culture with chariots in the Ganga–Yamuna Doab; linked by archaeologists to the Copper Hoard and Ochre Coloured Pottery (OCP) cultures.

The interpretation of Sinauli — including its relationship to the Harappans and to the Vedic people — is actively debated.

The Copper Hoard and OCP cultures

  • Copper Hoards — collections of copper objects (harpoons, swords, axes, anthropomorphic figures) found in the Ganga–Yamuna Doab.
  • Ochre Coloured Pottery (OCP) — a pottery culture of the Doab associated with these hoards.

Painted Grey Ware (PGW) culture

  • The PGW culture (roughly early first millennium BCE) is associated with the later Vedic period in the western Ganga plain.
  • Important PGW sites in UP include Hastinapur, Ahichchhatra, Mathura, Kaushambi and Atranjikhera.
  • Iron use increased during this period.

The Vedic age and UP

  • The later Vedic period saw the centre of Vedic culture shift eastward to the Kuru–Panchala region — much of it in present western and central UP.
  • Hastinapur, associated with the Kurus in tradition, and Ahichchhatra and Kampilya, associated with the Panchalas, are in UP.
  • Further east, Kosala and Kashi emerged as powerful kingdoms, leading to the age of the mahajanapadas (see our next guide).

Why this matters for UPPSC

  • Prelims asks about sites and their districts.
  • GS V may ask about UP's contribution to early Indian civilisation.
  • The discoveries at Sinauli and the Mesolithic sites of Pratapgarh give UP a distinctive place in Indian prehistory.

Practice

Prelims-style:

  1. Which Harappan site in UP is considered the easternmost?
  2. Where were chariot burials discovered in 2018?
  3. Name two Mesolithic burial sites in Pratapgarh.
  4. Which valley in south UP shows a long Stone Age sequence?
  5. Name two Painted Grey Ware sites in UP.

Mains-style:

  • "Uttar Pradesh holds a continuous record of human settlement from the Stone Age to the historic period." Discuss with examples.
  • Examine the significance of the Sinauli discoveries.

A note on dates and numbers. Exam patterns, vacancies and schedules change from year to year. Always confirm the current details in the latest notification on the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission website .
