In this guide
Few regions of the world pack as much architectural history into one landscape as Uttar Pradesh. Within a day's travel, you can see a Buddhist stupa from the Gupta era, an early stone temple, a fifteenth-century mosque with Egyptian-style gateways, the most famous tomb on earth, and a palace built as famine relief. For UPPSC, UP's architecture is a regular GS V theme and a Prelims favourite.

- Many temples in the Ganga plain were destroyed or rebuilt over centuries; Varanasi and Mathura–Vrindavan have temples of various periods, including the sixteenth-century Govind Dev temple in Vrindavan built by Raja Man Singh in red sandstone.

| Tourism pressure | Crowding, wear |
| Neglect | Lesser-known monuments in rural areas |
