Every twelve years, the sandy banks of the Sangam at Prayagraj — where the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati meet — become, for a few weeks, one of the largest temporary cities on earth. The Kumbh Mela draws crores of pilgrims, ascetics and visitors. It is the most spectacular of Uttar Pradesh's many festivals and fairs, which together express the state's religious diversity, living traditions and economic life.

The Kumbh Mela

BasisAstrological positions of Jupiter, the Sun and the Moon
RitualsHoly dip (snan) on auspicious days; the Shahi Snan / Amrit Snan processions of the akharas (orders of ascetics)
UNESCOInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017
  • The Maha Kumbh was held at Prayagraj in 2025, attracting a record number of pilgrims.
  • Every year, the Magh Mela is held at the Sangam, with the Kalpavas tradition of pilgrims staying for a month.

Managing the Kumbh: a governance lesson

The Kumbh is a case study in managing mass gatherings: temporary city planning, sanitation, health services, crowd control, traffic, security, disaster preparedness and technology (CCTV, crowd analytics). It has also seen tragic stampedes in several years — including in 2025 — underlining the importance of crowd management.

Ramlila

  • Theatrical enactment of the Ramayana, based largely on Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, performed across UP (and north India) during Dussehra.
  • The Ramnagar Ramlila (Varanasi), patronised by the Kashi royal family, lasts about a month and uses the whole town as its stage.
  • Ramlila was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2008.
