Madhya Pradesh has the largest forest cover of any Indian state. In the India State of Forest Report, it consistently ranks first by area of forest cover — around a quarter of the state is forested. From the teak forests of the Satpura and Vindhya hills to the sal forests of Mandla and Balaghat, these forests are home to tigers and barasingha, to tribal communities whose lives depend on them, and to a forest economy that supplies timber, bamboo and the tendu leaves used to make bidis. For MPPSC, forests link geography, economy, environment and tribal welfare.

How much forest?

IndicatorPosition
Forest cover (area)Largest of any state in India
Share of geographical areaRoughly one-quarter
Districts with high coverBalaghat, Mandla, Dindori, Seoni, Betul, Sheopur, Chhindwara and others

Forest types

TypeWhereMain trees

Tropical dry deciduousMost of the state — Malwa, Vindhya, SatpuraTeak, tendu, mahua, khair, bamboo
Tropical thorn forestsNorth-west — Bhind, Morena, Shivpuri, Sheopur (lower rainfall)Babul, khair, ber

Teak and sal are the two most important timber trees:

  • Teak forests — south and west (Betul, Narmadapuram, Harda, Khandwa, Sagar).
  • Sal forests — east (Mandla, Balaghat, Dindori, Shahdol).

Minor forest produce

Forests provide minor forest produce (MFP) — the most important source of cash income for many tribal families.

ProduceUse
Tendu leavesRolled into bidis; MP is among the largest producers in India
Mahua flowers and seedsFood, liquor, oil

Forest governance

  • Joint Forest Management (JFM) — MP was among the early states to involve village committees in forest protection and regeneration.
  • Forest Rights Act, 2006 — recognition of individual and community forest rights; MP has one of the largest numbers of claims in India.
  • PESA rules (2022) — powers for gram sabhas over minor forest produce in Scheduled Areas.
  • Protected areas — national parks, tiger reserves and sanctuaries (see our post on the tiger state).

Threats

ThreatExplanation
EncroachmentFarming and settlement on forest land
Illegal fellingTimber smuggling
Forest firesEspecially in dry months
MiningCoal, bauxite and other minerals in forest areas
Dams and infrastructureSubmergence and fragmentation (e.g., Ken–Betwa)
GrazingDegradation of forest undergrowth
Invasive speciesLantana and others

A Mains framework

  1. Protect core forests and wildlife corridors.
  2. Empower communities — JFM, forest rights, fair prices for MFP.
  3. Restore degraded forests with native species.
  4. Balance development — careful appraisal of mining and dam projects.
  5. Use technology — satellite monitoring, fire alerts.

Practice

Prelims-style:

  1. Which state has the largest forest cover in India?
  2. Where are sal forests found in MP?
  3. What is MP's state animal, and where is it found?
  4. Which leaf is used to make bidis?
  5. Which organisation manages the trade in tendu leaves in MP?

Mains-style (short): Why is minor forest produce important for tribal communities?

Mains-style (long): Discuss the challenges of forest conservation in Madhya Pradesh and the role of communities.

A note on dates and numbers. Exam patterns, vacancies and schedules change from year to year. Always confirm the current details in the latest notification on the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission website .
