In this guide
Put your finger on Itarsi on a railway map. The Delhi–Chennai trunk line runs north to south through it. The Mumbai–Howrah line via Jabalpur and Prayagraj runs west to east through it. A train from almost anywhere in north India to almost anywhere in the south or west is likely to cross Madhya Pradesh, and many of them will stop at Itarsi.
That is MP's transport story in one image. The state sits at the centre of India's main corridors, which makes it a natural logistics hub. The same large, landlocked, forested territory makes it hard to connect its own remote districts. MPPSC asks both sides. Prelims asks the junctions, zones, airports and projects. Mains asks how transport can drive development without damaging forests and wildlife.
Why MP's location matters
- Through routes: MP lies on the Delhi–Chennai, Delhi–Mumbai and Mumbai–Howrah corridors by both road and rail.
- Five neighbours: Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. That makes MP a link between the Gangetic plain, the western ports and the Deccan.
- Distance from the sea: MP has no coast, so goods for export travel hundreds of kilometres to ports such as Kandla, Mundra and JNPA. Good land transport is the only way to offset that cost.
Railways
Why the junctions are where they are
The big junctions sit where trunk routes meet or where a line leaves the main route for a resource belt.
| Junction | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Itarsi (Narmadapuram) | Crossing point of the Delhi–Chennai and Mumbai–Howrah routes |
| Bina (Sagar) | Where the Katni line leaves the Delhi–Bhopal trunk route |
| Katni | Freight hub for the coal, cement and limestone belt; lines to Bina, Jabalpur, Bilaspur and Singrauli |
| Jabalpur | On the Mumbai–Howrah route; West Central Railway headquarters |
| Bhopal | State capital on the Delhi–Chennai route |
| Ratlam and Nagda | On the Delhi–Mumbai main line of Western Railway |
| Ujjain and Indore | Malwa's links to Ratlam, Bhopal and the rest of the network |
Railway zones
The West Central Railway, headquartered at Jabalpur, began functioning in 2003. Its three divisions are Jabalpur, Bhopal and Kota (Kota is in Rajasthan). Not all of MP falls under it:
- the Ratlam division of Western Railway covers much of Malwa (Ratlam, Ujjain, Indore);
- Gwalior falls under the Jhansi division of North Central Railway;
- parts of the east and south fall under South East Central Railway, and the Khandwa–Burhanpur section under Central Railway.
Stations and new trains
- Rani Kamlapati station, Bhopal was formerly Habibganj. It was redeveloped under a public–private partnership model and is often described as India's first station redeveloped to world-class standards. It was renamed after the Gond queen Rani Kamlapati and inaugurated in November 2021.
- Vande Bharat trains link Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur and other cities with Delhi and neighbouring states.
Roads
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| NH-44 (Srinagar–Kanyakumari) | Enters MP near Morena and runs through Gwalior, Sagar and Seoni towards Nagpur. It does not pass through Jabalpur |
| Wildlife underpasses on NH-44 | The stretch near Pench, between Seoni and the Maharashtra border, has animal underpasses. They are a model of wildlife-friendly design |
| Delhi–Mumbai Expressway | Passes through Mandsaur, Ratlam and Jhabua districts in western MP |
| Planned state corridors | The Atal Progress-Way through the Chambal region (Sheopur–Morena–Bhind) and the Narmada Expressway along the Narmada valley |
| Rural roads | PMGSY (launched December 2000) and state programmes have connected most villages with all-weather roads |
Airports
| Airport | City | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Devi Ahilyabai Holkar | Indore | MP's busiest airport; some international flights |
| Raja Bhoj | Bhopal | State capital |
| Dumna | Jabalpur | Mahakoshal region |
| Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia | Gwalior | Northern MP |
| Khajuraho | Khajuraho | Serves the UNESCO temples |
| Rewa | Rewa | Opened in 2024 |
Smaller airports such as Datia and Satna have been linked through the Union government's UDAN regional connectivity scheme.
Metro rail and city transport
Metro projects are under way in Indore and Bhopal. Indore opened its first priority stretch to passengers in 2025, and both networks are being built in phases. In cities of this size, frequent city buses, safe footpaths and cycle lanes serve most daily trips, so they deserve as much attention as the metro.
Logistics and warehousing
- MP's grain procurement needs very large warehousing capacity, and the state has built it up alongside its rise in wheat procurement.
- Inland container depots near Indore (Pithampur) and Bhopal (Mandideep) let exporters clear customs inland and send sealed containers by rail to the ports.
- The state's logistics policy and the Union PM Gati Shakti plan aim at multimodal logistics parks, where rail, road and warehousing meet.
For the industrial clusters these links serve, see industrial regions of MP.
Challenges
| Challenge | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Forests and wildlife | Roads and railways through Kanha–Pench, Satpura and other landscapes cut wildlife corridors and cause roadkill |
| Remote tribal districts | Scattered hamlets in the Satpura–Maikal hills and the Bhil belt are hard and costly to connect |
| Road safety | Highways carry heavy freight; accidents are frequent |
| Public transport | Rural and inter-district bus services are thin, and many routes are run by private operators |
| Landlocked | Exporters pay for long hauls to the ports |
For the forest and wildlife side, see tigers and protected areas of MP.
For Mains: a model outline
Question: "Madhya Pradesh's central location is both an opportunity and a constraint. Discuss with reference to its transport infrastructure." (250 words)
- Introduction: MP sits on the Delhi–Chennai, Delhi–Mumbai and Mumbai–Howrah corridors; Itarsi as the symbol.
- Opportunity: through traffic, warehousing, inland container depots, expressway-linked industrial nodes, logistics parks under PM Gati Shakti.
- Constraint: landlocked, so export freight costs more; large area and forests make last-mile links costly.
- Intra-state gaps: tribal districts and Bundelkhand still have weaker links than Malwa.
- Environmental balance: NH-44 underpasses near Pench as a model; plan corridors around tiger landscapes.
- Way forward: last-mile roads, rural bus services, multimodal parks, road-safety engineering and emergency care, urban mass transit.
- Conclusion: turn "centre of India" into "logistics hub of India" without cutting the state's forests into pieces.
Practice
1. The headquarters of the West Central Railway is at: (a) Bhopal (b) Itarsi (c) Jabalpur (d) Katni
Answer: (c). The zone began functioning in 2003.

Mains-style (150 words): How can highway and railway projects in MP be designed to protect wildlife corridors?
Revise this
- Itarsi as the crossing point; trace both routes from memory
- Junctions: Itarsi, Bina, Katni, Jabalpur, Bhopal, Ratlam, Nagda
- West Central Railway: Jabalpur, 2003, three divisions; other zones in MP
- Rani Kamlapati: Habibganj, PPP, November 2021
- NH-44 route and its Pench underpasses; Delhi–Mumbai Expressway districts
- Airport names; Rewa 2024; UDAN
- Opportunity vs constraint framework
