Most candidates check the age limit, see "graduation in any discipline" and stop reading. The trouble usually comes later, at document verification, from details they skimmed: the exact date on which age is counted, the date by which a final-year student must have passed, a category certificate in the wrong format, or an old loan default.

This guide goes through each rule, shows how to calculate your own position, and ends with a checklist to finish before you apply.

Nationality

The 2026 notification invites applications from Indian citizens. The selected candidates may be posted anywhere in India.

Age limit

The rule is not below 21 and not above 30 years on a cut-off date. For 2026 the date was 1 April 2026, which meant a general candidate had to be born between 2 April 1996 and 1 April 2005, both days included.

Relaxation in the upper age limit

CategoryRelaxationUpper age limit
OBC (non-creamy layer)3 years33
SC / ST5 years35
PwBD (UR / EWS)10 years40
PwBD (OBC)13 years43
PwBD (SC / ST)15 years45
Ex-servicemen and commissioned officers (ECOs / SSCOs) with 5 years' military service, as defined5 years35

Two points trip people up:

  • Relaxations do not stack beyond what the table allows. The notification says cumulative relaxation is not available.
  • OBC candidates in the creamy layer get neither OBC reservation nor the age relaxation. They apply as unreserved.

Worked example. An aspirant was born on 15 March 1996 and belongs to the unreserved category. Their birth date falls before 2 April 1996, the earliest date the notification allows, so they are not eligible, even though they turned 30 only about two weeks before the cut-off date. The same person with a valid OBC (non-creamy layer) certificate would be eligible, because the limit rises to 33.

Educational qualification

  • Graduation in any discipline from a recognised university, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government.
  • Professional degrees such as medicine, engineering, chartered accountancy and cost accountancy are also accepted.
  • Final-year or final-semester students may apply provisionally. If called for interview, they must prove they passed by the date in the notification. For 2026 that date was 30 September 2026.
  • Integrated dual degree holders must have passed on or before the same date.

The date of passing is the date on the mark sheet or provisional certificate. If a university only posts results online, you need a certificate from the university stating the date the result was posted.

There is no minimum percentage in graduation for SBI PO.

Number of attempts

SBI limits the number of times you can use your chance at PO. This rule is often misread.

CategoryMaximum permissible chances (2026)
UR / EWS6
UR (PwBD), EWS (PwBD), OBC, OBC (PwBD)9
SC / ST, SC (PwBD), ST (PwBD)No restriction

What counts as a chance?

Under the 2026 notification:

  • Appearing in the Main Examination counts as a chance.
  • Appearing in only the Preliminary Examination does not.
  • In a year when SBI held only one written exam (no prelims), appearing in it counted as a chance.
  • If you have already used all your permissible chances, you are not eligible to apply.

Worked example. An unreserved candidate sat the prelims four times. They cleared it twice and sat the mains both times. Under the 2026 rule they have used 2 of their 6 chances. The two years in which they sat only the prelims do not count.

The CIBIL clause

The 2026 notification has a clause on credit history. If you have defaulted on a loan or credit card and your account shows an adverse history with CIBIL or another credit bureau, you must repay or regularise the dues by the date of joining. You then need either an updated credit report or a no-dues letter from the lender. If you cannot produce this, the offer can be withdrawn.

This does not stop you applying, but check your credit report early. Correcting a bureau record can take weeks.

Other conditions worth knowing

  • Category is fixed at registration. You cannot change it later, so decide carefully and have the certificate ready.
  • OBC certificates must contain the non-creamy layer clause and fall within the period the notification specifies.
  • EWS candidates need an Income and Asset Certificate for the financial year the notification names.
  • Service bond. On joining, SBI asks for a bond (₹2 lakh in 2026) to serve at least three years. It is not an eligibility rule, but know it before you accept an offer.
  • Application fee for 2026 was ₹750 for UR, EWS and OBC candidates and nil for SC, ST and PwBD candidates.

Your eligibility checklist

  • Birth date checked against the cut-off date in the current notification
  • Category certificate in the prescribed format, with a valid date (OBC: non-creamy layer; EWS: correct financial year)
  • PwBD certificate, if applicable
  • Graduation mark sheets and certificate, or a realistic date for your final result
  • A count of how many times you have appeared in the SBI PO mains
  • Your credit report checked for any overdue loan or card dues
  • Photo ID with the same name and details as your application

Quick check

  1. On which date is age counted? On the cut-off date in the notification (1 April 2026 for the 2026 cycle).
  2. What is the upper age limit for an OBC (non-creamy layer) PwBD candidate? 43 years (30 + 13).
  3. Does sitting only the prelims use up an attempt? Not under the 2026 rule. Only a mains appearance counts.
  4. How many chances does an EWS (PwBD) candidate have? 9.
  5. Can a final-year student apply? Yes, provisionally, but they must prove they passed by the notified date if called for interview.
