In this guide
The final result feels like the finish line. It is really the start of a second, longer assessment. For the first two years an SBI PO is exactly what the title says: a probationary officer, trained and watched by the bank, and confirmed only on meeting its standards.
Knowing what lies ahead helps in two ways. It makes the first year easier to settle into, and it gives you honest material for the interview, where panels often ask whether you understand the job you are applying for.
The terms at a glance
| Term | What the 2026 notification says |
|---|---|
| Before joining | Complete an online course in basic banking |
| Service bond | ₹2 lakh, to serve the bank for at least three years |
| Probation | Two years, with continuous assessment |
| After probation | Confirmed in Junior Management Grade Scale I (JMGS-I) if you meet the bank's standards |
| If standards are not met | Services may be terminated under the bank's policy |
| Starting basic pay | ₹56,480 (₹48,480 plus four advance increments) |
| Credit history | Any loan or card default must be regularised before joining |
Before you join
Three things need your attention between the result and the joining date.
- The pre-joining course. The 2026 notification asks selected candidates to complete an online course in basic banking. Treat it seriously. It covers the vocabulary and processes you will use from the first week.
- Documents and medical. The offer letter lists the documents, forms and medical examination required. Resolve any mismatch in names or dates of birth across certificates before the deadline.
- Credit history. The notification has a CIBIL clause. If your credit report shows an overdue loan or card, you must clear or regularise it and produce an updated report or a no-dues letter by joining. Correcting a bureau record can take weeks, so do not leave it to the last month.
Our guide to joining SBI after selection has a full pre-joining checklist.
The service bond
At joining, a PO signs a bond, ₹2 lakh under the 2026 notification, to serve the bank for at least three years. If you resign before that, the bond amount becomes payable.
Think about this before you join, not after. It matters most if:
- you are also waiting for another result, such as a civil services or RBI exam;
- you are planning higher studies within three years;
- you have family reasons that may make an all-India posting difficult.
The bond does not stop you from preparing for other exams while in service, but leaving within three years has a real cost. Check the exact wording in your offer letter.
Training: what it usually involves
SBI trains its POs through a mix of classroom learning and work in branches and offices. The exact structure has changed over the years, so take this as the general shape rather than a fixed schedule.
| Part | What it covers | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Induction | The bank's structure, values, rules and systems | SBI's learning centres |
| Classroom training | Operations, credit, compliance, products, technology and customer service | SBI's learning centres |
| On-the-job training | Work across desks such as deposits, cash, clearing, loans and customer service | Branches and offices |
| Continuous assessment | Performance and conduct during probation, under the bank's policy | Throughout |
Rotation across desks is the heart of it. A PO who has handled deposits, remittances, loans and customer complaints understands how a branch actually runs, which is the point: the PO cadre exists to produce future branch managers and credit officers.
Probation and confirmation
Probation is two years under the 2026 notification. During that time the bank assesses your work and conduct on a continuing basis. Those who meet its standards are confirmed in JMGS-I. Those who do not may have their services terminated under the bank's policy.
In practice, confirmation is rarely about one test. It is about a steady record: work done correctly, rules followed, customers handled well and no compliance lapses. Any internal assessments the bank uses will be explained in your appointment letter or later instructions.
Postings
SBI's branches are spread across the country, and POs can be posted anywhere in India. Early postings are often in smaller towns or rural branches. That can feel like a setback, but these branches often give the broadest exposure: agricultural lending, small business loans, government schemes and customers of every kind. That breadth carries into every later role, from credit to branch management.
A posting in another state also means a new language. Learning the basics quickly helps with customers and colleagues, and earns goodwill.
Habits that help in the first years
- Ask questions. Experienced staff are the best teachers of branch work. Ask early, while mistakes are cheap.
- Keep notes of procedures, circulars and software steps the first time you do each one.
- Double-check every approval and entry. Audits will review them later.
- Follow KYC and compliance rules strictly, even on a busy day and even when a customer is impatient.
- Start JAIIB early. The Indian Institute of Banking and Finance's JAIIB and CAIIB certifications deepen your knowledge and are valued in the bank. Check what weight they carry under SBI's current rules once you join.
- Look after your health. Long days are common in the first year.
Common early challenges
| Challenge | What helps |
|---|---|
| A posting far from home | Learn basic local phrases and the area's economy quickly; build a routine outside work |
| New software and procedures | Write each process down step by step the first time |
| Targets for products | Understand each product well and explain it honestly, including its costs |
| Customer complaints | Listen fully, explain the rule, and escalate when needed |
| Long hours in the first months | Protect sleep; the pace usually settles once you know the systems |
A learning log
Keep a simple log from your first month:
| Month | Desk or role | What I learnt | Questions still open |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | |||
| 2 | |||
| 3 |
By the end of probation, this log becomes your own practical guide to the bank, and it is useful material for later internal interviews too.
