Salary figures for SBI PO circulate widely, and many of them compare the wrong things: one site's CTC against another's in-hand pay, a Mumbai figure against a small-town one, or last year's allowances against this year's. This guide gives you the official starting point, explains how the pay scale works, and shows why the number you see on a coaching website may not match your first payslip.

What the 2026 notification says

The notification states:

  • Starting basic pay of ₹48,480, plus 4 advance increments.
  • The scale is 48480-2000/7-62480-2340/2-67160-2680/7-85920, applicable to Junior Management Grade Scale I (JMGS-I).
  • The officer is eligible for DA, HRA, CCA, PF, contributory pension (NPS), LFC, medical facility, lease rental facility and other allowances and perquisites under the bank's rules.
  • The approximate CTC at the initial scale in Mumbai is ₹21.97 lakh a year.

How to read the pay scale

The scale string is a compact way of writing every step of basic pay:

Part of the scaleMeaning
48480The starting basic pay of the scale
2000/7Seven increments of ₹2,000 each
62480Basic pay after those seven increments
2340/2Two increments of ₹2,340 each
67160Basic pay after those two increments
2680/7Seven increments of ₹2,680 each
85920The maximum of the scale

You can check the arithmetic yourself: 48,480 + (7 × 2,000) = 62,480; 62,480 + (2 × 2,340) = 67,160; 67,160 + (7 × 2,680) = 85,920.

What "4 advance increments" means

A PO does not start at the bottom of the scale. The four advance increments move the starting basic up four steps:

48,480 + (4 × 2,000) = ₹56,480

So the basic pay on your first payslip, under the 2026 terms, is ₹56,480, not ₹48,480. Many articles quote the lower figure; both are "correct", but only one is your actual basic.

Worked example. After joining at ₹56,480, suppose an officer earns three annual increments while still in JMGS-I. Three more steps of ₹2,000 take the basic to 56,480 + 6,000 = ₹62,480, the end of the first segment. The next increment is ₹2,340, taking it to ₹64,820.

How the pay is built

ComponentWhat it isWhat it depends on
Basic payYour step on the scaleScale, advance increments, years of service
Dearness allowance (DA)A percentage of basic pay that tracks inflationRevised periodically under the wage settlement
HRA or leased accommodationHelp with housing, either as an allowance or through a bank-leased flatCity of posting and the bank's rules
City compensatory allowance (CCA)An extra for certain citiesCity of posting
Special and other allowancesFurther allowances under the bank's rulesRules in force
Performance-linked incentivesWhere the bank's scheme appliesBank and individual performance

Basic and DA together drive most other items, including your pension contribution. That is why a rise in DA lifts your whole package, not just one line of it.

CTC and in-hand pay: two different numbers

CTC (cost to company) is everything the bank spends on you in a year. It includes monthly pay and allowances, but also the bank's pension contribution, the value of leased housing, medical cover, leave fare concession and other benefits you never see as cash.

In-hand pay is what reaches your bank account each month, after deductions such as your own pension contribution, income tax and any other recoveries.

ItemPart of CTC?Part of monthly in-hand pay?
Basic pay and DAYesYes, before deductions
HRA (if you take it as cash)YesYes
Value of a bank-leased flatYesNo, you get housing instead of cash
Bank's NPS contributionYesNo, it goes to your pension account
Medical and LFC benefitsYesNo, used when you claim them
Your own NPS contribution and income taxCounted in gross payDeducted before you are paid

The Mumbai CTC of about ₹22 lakh is therefore far higher than twelve months of in-hand pay. A PO posted in a smaller town will also have a different CTC because city-linked allowances and housing values differ.

Benefits beyond pay

  • Housing: leased accommodation or HRA, depending on posting and rules.
  • Medical cover for the officer and dependent family, as per the bank's scheme.
  • Leave: casual, privilege and sick leave, with rules on encashment.
  • Leave fare concession (LFC) for travel with family.
  • Staff loans for housing, vehicles and education, usually at concessional rates.
  • Pension: SBI officers who joined after the switch to the National Pension System are covered by NPS, with contributions from both the officer and the bank.

Career path

GradeTypical roles
JMGS-IProbationary officer, then assistant or deputy manager roles
MMGS-II and MMGS-IIIBranch manager of smaller branches; credit, operations and specialised roles
SMGS-IV and SMGS-VLarger branches, regional and administrative offices
Top executive grades and aboveSenior management

Each grade has its own pay scale, so a promotion moves you onto a higher scale rather than just adding an increment. The 2026 notification says the promotion policy offers "meritorious and exceptionally brilliant officers" a path to the top management grade in "a reasonably quick time", but gives no fixed timeline. Promotions depend on performance, internal processes, vacancies and years of service.

Professional certifications from the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (IIBF), especially JAIIB and CAIIB, deepen your knowledge and are valued in the bank. Check the incentives and promotion weight they carry under SBI's current rules once you join.

Practice questions

  1. What is the basic pay of a new PO under the 2026 terms? ₹56,480 (₹48,480 plus four increments of ₹2,000).
  2. How many increments are there in the whole JMGS-I scale? 16 (7 + 2 + 7).
  3. An officer's basic is ₹67,160. What is it after two more increments? ₹72,520 (67,160 + 2 × 2,680).
  4. Is the bank's NPS contribution part of your monthly in-hand pay? No. It is part of CTC and goes to your pension account.
  5. Why can two POs in the same batch have different CTCs? City-linked allowances, housing value and HRA differ by posting.

What to do next

  • Read the "Emoluments" section of the current notification and note the basic pay and CTC it states.
  • If you are comparing SBI and another bank, build a small table of basic, DA, housing and pension for the same city.
  • Read what an SBI PO does to weigh the pay against the work, and the eligibility guide to confirm you can apply.

A note on dates and numbers. Exam patterns, vacancies and schedules change from year to year. Always confirm the current details in the latest notification on the State Bank of India website .
