In this guide
When the Rewa Ultra Mega Solar park began supplying electricity in 2018, it made headlines for two reasons: the record-low tariff at which its power was sold, and one of its customers — the Delhi Metro, hundreds of kilometres away. The project symbolised a shift in Madhya Pradesh's energy story. For decades, MP's energy identity was built on coal, especially around Singrauli, whose giant thermal plants still power much of north India. Today, the state is adding large solar, floating solar and wind capacity. For MPPSC, energy combines geography, economy and environment.
Thermal power (the backbone)
| Plant | District | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Vindhyachal Super Thermal Power Station (NTPC) | Singrauli | Among the largest thermal power stations in India |
| Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project | Singrauli | Large private-sector plant with captive coal mines |
| Singrauli area plants | Singrauli | The region is called the "energy capital" |
| Satpura Thermal Power Station | Sarni (Betul) | State-owned |
| Sanjay Gandhi Thermal Power Station | Birsinghpur (Umaria) | State-owned |
| Amarkantak Thermal Power Station | Chachai (Anuppur) | State-owned |
| Shri Singaji Thermal Power Project | Khandwa | State-owned; supercritical units |
Hydropower
| Project | River | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Indira Sagar | Narmada | About 1,000 MW — MP's largest hydro project |
| Omkareshwar | Narmada | Hydro plus floating solar |
| Bargi | Narmada | Irrigation and power |
| Gandhi Sagar | Chambal | Joint MP–Rajasthan |
| Bansagar | Son | Joint MP–UP–Bihar |
Solar and wind
| Project | Details |
|---|---|
| Rewa Ultra Mega Solar (Gurh, Rewa) | 750 MW; commissioned 2018; supplies the Delhi Metro and MP; known for a record-low tariff and innovative contract design |
| Omkareshwar floating solar | On the Omkareshwar reservoir (Khandwa); planned as one of the world's largest floating solar projects (first phases commissioned from 2024) |
| Agar–Shajapur–Neemuch solar parks | Large solar parks in western MP |
| Morena | Solar-with-storage project for round-the-clock supply |
| Wind | Dewas, Ratlam, Mandsaur, Shajapur, Betul |
Nuclear
A nuclear power project has long been proposed at Chutka in Mandla district, but it has faced opposition from local tribal communities over displacement and safety concerns.
The power sector
- Generation: MP Power Generating Company; central and private plants.
- Transmission: MP Power Transmission Company.
- Distribution: three regional discoms (east, central and west zones — Jabalpur, Bhopal and Indore) under the MP Power Management Company.
- Regulator: MP Electricity Regulatory Commission.
MP achieved near-universal household electrification under national schemes and has worked to separate agricultural feeders (the Atal Jyoti Abhiyan provided round-the-clock supply to non-farm consumers in villages).
Challenges
| Challenge | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Coal dependence | Emissions and air pollution, especially in Singrauli |
| Displacement | Mines and plants displacing villages |
| Discom finances | Losses from subsidised farm power and theft |
| Water use | Thermal plants need large amounts of water |
| Renewable integration | Grid stability, storage and transmission for variable solar and wind |
| Land | Securing land for solar parks without harming farmers or ecosystems |
A Mains framework
- Expand renewables — solar, floating solar, wind, with storage.
- Clean up coal — pollution control, efficient plants, a just transition for coal regions.
- Fix distribution — reduce losses; targeted subsidies.
- Innovate — floating solar on reservoirs avoids land conflicts.
- Protect communities — fair rehabilitation and local benefits.
Practice
Prelims-style:
- Where is the Vindhyachal thermal power station?
- When was the Rewa Ultra Mega Solar park commissioned, and who buys its power?
- On which reservoir is MP's large floating solar project?
- Which is MP's largest hydropower project?
- Where has a nuclear power plant been proposed in MP?
Mains-style (short): Why is floating solar attractive for MP?
Mains-style (long): Discuss Madhya Pradesh's transition from coal to renewable energy and the challenges involved.
