In this guide
In the UPPSC Mains, every paper is descriptive and every paper counts. Your knowledge reaches the examiner only through your writing. Two candidates with the same knowledge can differ by dozens of marks because one writes structured, specific, well-presented answers and the other writes long, unorganised paragraphs.
How an examiner reads your answer
It helps to imagine the person on the other side. An examiner evaluating UPPSC Mains copies may check dozens of scripts in a day, each with many answers. They do not have time to search for your best point in the middle of a long paragraph. In the first few seconds, they look at the opening line, the subheadings or points, any example or data that stands out, and the conclusion. From these, they form an impression that the rest of the answer mostly confirms.
This is why structure matters so much. A well-structured answer lets the examiner see, at a glance, that you understood the question, covered its parts, and brought something specific to it. A wall of text — even an accurate one — asks the examiner to do work they may not have time for.
Read the question
Before writing a word, read the question twice and identify four things: the directive word, the parts of the question, its scope, and the word limit.
The directive word tells you what kind of answer is expected:
| Word | What it asks |
|---|---|
| Discuss / विवेचना कीजिए | Explore various aspects |
| Examine / परीक्षण कीजिए | Probe in detail, with evidence |
| Analyse / विश्लेषण कीजिए | Break into parts; show relationships |
| Evaluate / मूल्यांकन कीजिए | Assess strengths and weaknesses; give a judgement |
| Comment / टिप्पणी कीजिए | Give an informed opinion |
| Explain / स्पष्ट कीजिए | Make clear, with reasons |
Next, look for the parts. Many questions have two or three demands — "examine the causes and suggest measures" — and answers that address only the first part lose up to half the marks. Check the scope: is the question about India, about UP, or both? Finally, note the word limit and marks, and plan the length accordingly. Writing 300 words for a 125-word question does not earn extra marks; it steals time from the next answer.
Plan (one minute)
In the margin, jot down:
- 3–5 main points;
- 1–2 examples (at least one from UP where relevant);
- one data point;
- a line for the conclusion.
Structure
| Part | Share | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Introduction | ~10% | Definition, fact, context |
| Body | ~75–80% | Points or short paragraphs under subheadings |
| Conclusion | ~10–15% | Balanced way forward |
A worked example
Question: "Examine the causes of the agrarian problems of Bundelkhand and suggest measures." (GS VI)
Introduction: Bundelkhand, spread across UP and MP, is among India's most drought-prone regions; its seven UP districts face recurring crop failure and out-migration.
Body — causes:
- Natural: low and erratic rainfall; hard rocky terrain; thin soils; high temperatures.
- Water: limited groundwater; traditional tanks (built under the Chandelas) in disrepair.
- Economic: small holdings; debt; low irrigation.
- Social: the practice of letting cattle loose (anna pratha), damaging crops.
Body — measures:
- Water: restoration of traditional tanks; farm ponds; the Ken–Betwa link project; drip irrigation.
- Agriculture: drought-tolerant crops (pulses, oilseeds, millets); horticulture.
- Infrastructure: the Bundelkhand Expressway; defence industrial corridor nodes (Jhansi, Chitrakoot).
- Livelihoods: dairy, goat rearing, non-farm work.
Conclusion: A combination of water conservation, suitable crops and non-farm jobs can make Bundelkhand resilient.
Using UP examples and data
| Theme | UP examples |
|---|---|
| Heritage | Sarnath; Taj Mahal; Kumbh (UNESCO) |
| Crafts | ODOP — Chikankari, Banarasi silk, Moradabad brass |
| Infrastructure | Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Ganga expressways |
| Governance | Police commissionerates; e-governance |
| Environment | Dudhwa; Ramsar wetlands; Ganga |
| Social | Encephalitis control in Gorakhpur; girls' education |
Record the source and year of each data point in your notes.

Hindi-medium tips
- Use standard terms consistently (see our guide on medium).
- Watch spelling and gender agreement.
- Keep sentences short and clear.
Common faults, and how to fix them
| Fault | Fix |
|---|---|
| Long introductions that repeat the question | One line of context or a definition, then move on |
| Answering only one part of a two-part question | Underline each demand before planning |
| Generic points that fit any state | Add one UP-specific fact or example |
| No conclusion | Always end with a balanced, forward-looking line |
| Unreadable handwriting | Slow down slightly; leave space between points |
Time management
- Allocate time by marks.
- If short of time, write the last answers in points.
- Leave five minutes to check for missed questions.
Practice routine
| Stage | Practice |
|---|---|
| Months 4–6 | One answer a day, untimed; focus on structure |
| Months 7–9 | Two answers a day, timed; weekly feedback |
| After Prelims | Full papers weekly; rewrite weak answers |
