In this guide
In Panna, in the Vindhyan hills of north-eastern Madhya Pradesh, people have searched for diamonds for centuries. Today, the Majhgawan mine, operated by the public sector NMDC, is the only mechanised diamond mine in India, and small-scale miners still sift gravel under government licences in the hope of finding a stone. Diamonds are only one part of Madhya Pradesh's mineral wealth: the state is also rich in copper, manganese, coal, limestone, bauxite and several rare industrial minerals. For MPPSC, minerals connect geography, economy and environment.
Metallic minerals
| Mineral | Main areas | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond | Panna (Majhgawan, Hinota) | MP is India's only diamond-producing state; NMDC's Majhgawan mine; small-scale "shallow mining" under licence |
| Copper | Malanjkhand (Balaghat) | One of India's largest open-cast copper mines (Hindustan Copper) |
| Manganese | Balaghat, Chhindwara, Jhabua | MP is among India's leading manganese producers (MOIL mines in Balaghat) |
| Bauxite | Katni, Jabalpur, Amarkantak (Anuppur), Shahdol | Aluminium ore |
| Iron ore | Jabalpur, Gwalior region | Smaller deposits |
Non-metallic minerals
| Mineral | Main areas | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Limestone | Katni, Satna, Damoh, Rewa, Neemuch | Raw material for cement — Satna and Katni are major cement centres |
| Pyrophyllite and diaspore | Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, Shivpuri | MP is among the leading producers of these refractory and ceramic minerals |
| Rock phosphate | Jhabua, Sagar | Fertiliser raw material |
| Dolomite | Jhabua, Katni, Balaghat | Steel and glass industries |
| Marble | Jabalpur (Bhedaghat), Katni | Building stone |
| Fireclay | Jabalpur, Shahdol | Refractories |
| Sandstone | Vindhyan region | Building stone |
Fuel minerals
| Mineral | Main areas | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Coal | Singrauli, Shahdol, Umaria, Anuppur, Sidhi, Betul (Pathakhera), Chhindwara (Pench–Kanhan) | Singrauli is the "energy capital" of India — large coal mines feeding giant thermal power plants |
| Coal-bed methane (CBM) | Sohagpur (Shahdol) | Natural gas extracted from coal seams |
Mineral-based industries
- Cement — Satna, Katni, Damoh, Neemuch.
- Copper — Malanjkhand (mining and concentration).
- Power — Singrauli, Sarni (Betul), Birsinghpur (Umaria).
- Refractories and ceramics — using pyrophyllite, diaspore and fireclay.
Governance
- Mineral auctions under the amended MMDR Act (2015) to improve transparency and revenue.
- District Mineral Foundation funds for the welfare of mining-affected people.
- MP's mining policies aim to promote exploration and value addition.
- Diamond auctions at Panna for stones found by small miners.
Issues in mining
| Issue | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Pollution | Air and water pollution around coal mines and power plants (Singrauli) |
| Displacement | Villages and tribal communities displaced by mines and plants |
| Forest loss | Mining in forested areas (coal, bauxite) |
| Illegal sand mining | In rivers such as the Narmada and Chambal — a major enforcement challenge |
| Worker safety and health | Dust diseases; accidents |
| Diamond mining and tigers | The Majhgawan mine lies near the Panna Tiger Reserve |
A Mains framework
- Sustainable mining — environmental safeguards, reclamation of mined land.
- Benefit-sharing — effective use of DMF funds; local jobs.
- Enforcement — technology (drones, satellite imagery) against illegal mining.
- Value addition — processing within the state.
- Just transition — preparing coal-dependent regions like Singrauli for a low-carbon future.
Practice
Prelims-style:
- Which is the only mechanised diamond mine in India, and where is it?
- Where is the Malanjkhand copper mine?
- Which district is called the energy capital of India?
- Where is coal-bed methane extracted in MP?
- Which minerals is MP a leading producer of for refractories?
Mains-style (short): Why is Singrauli called the energy capital?
Mains-style (long): Discuss the economic importance of minerals in MP and the environmental and social costs of mining.
