Cropping patterns of UP

Uttar Pradesh is India's largest producer of wheat, sugarcane and potato, and a leading producer of milk, vegetables and mangoes. Its cropping pattern varies sharply from the sugarcane belt of the west to the rice fields of the east and the pulses of Bundelkhand. The geography of UP's agriculture, region by region.

Uttar Pradesh feeds a large part of India. It is the country's largest producer of wheat, sugarcane and potato, and a leading producer of milk, vegetables and mangoes. Yet its farmers' incomes are modest, holdings are tiny, and regions differ enormously — from the prosperous canal-irrigated sugarcane belt of the west to the flood-prone rice fields of the east and the drought-stricken fields of Bundelkhand.

Agro-climatic zones

UP is divided into nine agro-climatic zones for agricultural planning, broadly:

RegionZones (broadly)Character
Western UPWestern plain; mid-western plain; south-western semi-aridCanal and tube-well irrigation; sugarcane, wheat, potato
Central UPCentral plainWheat, rice, potato, pulses; Awadh
Eastern UPEastern plain; north-eastern plainRice, wheat; floods; high density
Terai / BhabarBhabar and TeraiRice, sugarcane, wheat
BundelkhandBundelkhandPulses, oilseeds, rain-fed
VindhyanVindhyanRain-fed; rice, pulses

Seasons and crops

SeasonMain crops
Kharif (June–October)Rice, maize, bajra, jowar, arhar (pigeon pea), urad, moong, groundnut, sugarcane (planting)
Rabi (October–April)Wheat, barley, gram, lentil, pea, mustard, potato
Zaid (summer)Moong, urad, vegetables, watermelon, cucumber

Horticulture

CropRegions
MangoMalihabad (Lucknow) — famous Dasheri; Saharanpur, Meerut, Varanasi (Langda), Amroha; UP is among the largest mango producers
GuavaPrayagraj (famous guavas), Kaushambi
Aonla (Indian gooseberry)Pratapgarh
BananaKushinagar, Ayodhya region
VegetablesAround cities; UP is a leading vegetable producer
Mentha (mint oil)Barabanki, Sambhal, Rampur, Badaun — UP is a major producer of menthol mint

GI-tagged agricultural products include Malihabadi Dasheri, Kalanamak rice (Siddharthnagar and neighbouring districts), Allahabadi Surkha guava and others.

Irrigation

SourceNotes
Tube wellsThe largest source of irrigation; heavy dependence on groundwater
CanalsUpper and Lower Ganga canals, Sharda canal, Eastern Yamuna canal, Gandak canal
OtherPonds and tanks (important in Bundelkhand)

UP has one of the largest irrigated areas in India, but groundwater depletion is a growing concern in western and central districts (see our guide on groundwater).

Landholdings

  • UP has the largest number of operational holdings in India.
  • The overwhelming majority are marginal (less than one hectare) and small.
  • Fragmentation limits mechanisation and investment.
  • Consolidation of holdings (chakbandi) was carried out in much of UP after independence — one of the more successful consolidation programmes in India.

Regional contrasts

RegionStrengthsProblems
Western UPIrrigation, sugarcane, high productivity, near NCR marketsGroundwater depletion, cane dues
Central UPMixed farming, potato, menthaUsar soils, fragmentation
Eastern UPFertile, water-richFloods, tiny holdings, low mechanisation, migration
BundelkhandPulses, oilseedsDrought, stray cattle (anna pratha), low irrigation

Constraints

  • Small and fragmented holdings.
  • Groundwater decline.
  • Floods in the east; drought in Bundelkhand.
  • Delayed sugarcane payments to farmers.
  • Stray cattle damaging crops.
  • Limited processing and cold storage relative to production (though potato cold storage is extensive).
  • Low crop diversification.

Practice

Prelims-style:

  1. Name four agricultural products in which UP is India's largest producer.
  2. Which region of UP is known for sugarcane?
  3. Which district is famous for Dasheri mangoes?
  4. What is Kalanamak rice, and where is it grown?
  5. What is the largest source of irrigation in UP?

Mains-style:

  • "UP's agriculture is productive but not prosperous." Discuss.
  • Compare the agricultural challenges of eastern UP and Bundelkhand.

A note on dates and numbers. Exam patterns, vacancies and schedules change from year to year. Always confirm the current details in the latest notification on the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission website .
