Purvanchal: floods, density and migration

Eastern Uttar Pradesh — Purvanchal — is fertile, water-rich and culturally vibrant, yet among the poorest parts of India, with floods from Nepal's rivers, tiny landholdings, very high population density and heavy migration. Purvanchal — "the eastern region" — covers the eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh, from Varanasi and Prayagraj to Gorakhpur, Deoria, Azamgarh, Ballia and the Nepal border. It is a land of deep culture: Kashi, Sarnath, Kushinagar, the Bhojpuri language and the Chhath festival. It is also a land of hardship: annual floods, tiny farms, crowded villages and young men who leave for Mumbai, Delhi, Punjab and the Gulf.

Extent

Purvanchal is not an official administrative unit, but broadly includes the eastern divisions of UP, such as:

  • Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Basti, Azamgarh, Mirzapur, Devipatan (Gonda) and parts of Prayagraj and Ayodhya divisions.

Geography

FeatureDetails
TerrainLow-lying, flat eastern Ganga plain; Terai in the north
RiversGanga, Ghaghara (Saryu), Rapti, Gandak, Rohini, Gomti, Tons
RainfallHigher than western UP
SoilsFertile alluvium; some waterlogged areas

Floods

  • Rivers from Nepal — the Rapti, Ghaghara, Gandak, Rohini — bring heavy monsoon floods to districts such as Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Siddharthnagar, Basti, Bahraich and Gonda.
  • Floods destroy crops, homes and roads almost every year and cause waterlogging.
  • Management depends on embankments, early warning and cooperation with Nepal.

Agriculture

  • Mainly rice and wheat; sugarcane in parts (e.g., the Gorakhpur–Deoria–Kushinagar belt, historically with many sugar mills).
  • Very small and fragmented holdings.
  • Low mechanisation and investment.
  • Specialty crops: Kalanamak rice (Siddharthnagar region, GI-tagged).

Population and migration

  • Very high density — among the highest in India.
  • Out-migration is a way of life — to Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Punjab, Gujarat, and the Gulf countries.
  • Remittances support households.
  • High sex ratios in some districts reflect male migration.
  • Culture of migration is captured in Bhojpuri folk songs and theatre.

Health: the encephalitis story

  • For decades, Gorakhpur and neighbouring districts saw outbreaks of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), killing thousands of children, especially in the monsoon.
  • BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, was the centre of treatment; a tragedy there in 2017 drew national attention.
  • A multi-pronged campaign — JE vaccination, sanitation, clean drinking water, early treatment at dedicated centres, surveillance and the Dastak community outreach campaign — sharply reduced deaths in the following years.

Culture and heritage

  • Varanasi (Kashi) — one of the world's oldest living cities; Kashi Vishwanath Corridor (inaugurated 2021).
  • Sarnath and Kushinagar — Buddhist heritage.
  • Gorakhnath temple and math (Gorakhpur) — the Nath tradition.
  • Bhojpuri language and music; Chhath.
  • Ballia — "Baghi Ballia" of 1942.
  • Ayodhya (on the western edge of the region).
